This is an editorial ranking, not a definitive consensus: “greatest” depends on what a list values. This one weighs comic writing and construction, ensemble performances, originality and influence, consistency, cultural impact, and staying power. It includes American and British live-action sitcoms, animated comedies, single-camera series, mockumentaries, and comedy-dramas when their central engine is recurring characters and comic situations. The ranking is English-language and U.S.-centered, rather than a complete survey of sitcom traditions worldwide.
How this ranking works
Each series is judged across six editorial dimensions: the sharpness and durability of its writing; the quality of its ensemble and performances; its distinctiveness and influence; how consistently it delivered across its run; its cultural reach; and its staying power. These are considerations, not numerical scores. Ratings, awards, longevity, and cultural impact can inform a judgment, but none alone proves that a show is funnier or better made.
Short-lived shows can outrank long-running ones when their concentrated quality, originality, or influence outweighs a longer run’s advantages. Conversely, a landmark with uneven seasons may still place highly if its best work and lasting contribution are exceptional. The result is a critical ranking, not a popularity poll or a claim that every viewer should agree.
For comparison, Martin Gitlin’s The Greatest Sitcoms of All Time is a sitcom-specific reference that ranks 70 programs using longevity, ratings, awards, humor, impact, and legacy, among other material in the book’s publisher description. This list uses its own scope and judgment; it does not claim agreement with that book’s order. Bloomsbury / Scarecrow Press describes the book and its scope.

Broad television rankings are a different exercise. TV Guide’s December 23, 2013 list blended genres to salute shows with “the biggest cultural impact and most enduring influence,” while Variety’s December 21, 2023 list considered English-language series aired or streamed in the United States, weighing quality and cultural impact. Neither is a sitcom-only ranking. TV Guide’s list introduction and Variety’s list explain their broader frames. Rolling Stone published a sitcom-specific “100 Best Sitcoms of All Time” in 2021, but its detailed selection criteria are not established here. Rolling Stone’s ranking is a useful comparator, not proof of a universal order.
The 60 greatest sitcoms of all time
The entries below are ranked from 60 to 1, with the strongest overall combination of comic craft, performance, originality, consistency, impact, and endurance at the top. The list’s geographic boundary matters: it recognizes British work and animation, but it is not a world survey and does not pretend that one language or market represents every sitcom tradition.

What the ranking values—and what it cannot settle
A sitcom can matter for more than one reason. A ratings hit demonstrates reach, not necessarily inventive writing; awards register recognition, not a complete account of audience attachment; and longevity offers more time to build a world, but also more opportunity for unevenness. This ranking treats those as context rather than interchangeable measurements of greatness.
Scope is another limit. An English-language, U.S.-centered list can include British series and still leave out major traditions in other languages and regions. The point is not that those works are lesser, but that a responsible international ranking would need a broader, comparably grounded selection rather than a handful of token entries.
