John Lennon’s “More Popular Than Jesus” Remark: What Happened in 1966

John Lennon’s 1966 comment that the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus now” sparked a serious backlash in the United States—but the available accounts do not show that it nearly ended the band. The remark began in a March interview with journalist Maureen Cleave; it became a major controversy months later, after a U.S. magazine republished it ahead of the Beatles’ summer tour.

What did John Lennon say?

In a 1966 interview with Maureen Cleave of London’s Evening Standard, Lennon discussed Christianity’s declining influence. He was quoted as saying: “Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue about that; I’m right and I will be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus now; I don’t know which will go first – rock & roll or Christianity.” The wording is reproduced in a retrospective account, rather than verified here against the original newspaper page. Rolling Stone Australia’s 2016 account recounts the remark and its aftermath.

How did the remark become a U.S. controversy?

The interview took place in March 1966, but it did not immediately provoke a major British public reaction. The controversy intensified in the United States when the teen magazine Datebook published excerpts from Cleave’s Beatles interviews on July 29, 1966. Lennon’s comments about Christianity appeared on the magazine’s cover, shortly before the band’s U.S. tour.

What was the backlash?

Accounts of the episode describe radio bans, record bonfires, boycotts and threats. A Library of Congress-hosted book excerpt attributes to Beatles biographer Ray Coleman an estimate that about 35 U.S. radio stations banned the group’s records. That is Coleman’s estimate, not a definitive independently verified count. The Library of Congress-hosted excerpt also reproduces Lennon’s later clarification.

How did Lennon explain what he meant?

At a Chicago press conference on August 12, 1966, Lennon said he was not attacking religion or claiming the Beatles were superior to Jesus. As reproduced in Rolling Stone Australia’s account, he said: “I’m not anti-God, anti-Christ or anti-religion. I was not knocking it. I was not saying we were greater or better… I used the word ‘Beatles’ as a remote thing.”

The Library of Congress-hosted excerpt gives a longer version of his explanation: “Look, I wasn’t saying The Beatles are better than God or Jesus. I said ‘Beatles’ because it’s easy for me to talk about Beatles. I could have said ‘TV’ or ‘the cinema’, ‘motorcars’ or anything popular and I would have got away with it. I’m not anti-god, anti-Christ or anti-religion. I was not saying we are greater or better.”

Did the remark almost ruin the Beatles?

The documented backlash was serious, but the accounts cited here do not establish that the incident nearly ended the band. “Almost ruined the Beatles” is dramatic headline language, not a conclusion supported by the reported evidence. What can be established is that the remark became a major U.S. flashpoint, prompting bans and public protests, and that Lennon publicly clarified his meaning during the tour.
