These five attributed quotations offer different ways to think about that power. Their wording and attributions are reported by the cited collections; where those collections do not establish an original source, that limit is noted rather than treated as proof of provenance.
Music and emotion
Ray Charles on music’s effect
“Music is powerful. As people listen to it, they can be affected. They respond.”
Parade attributes this observation to Ray Charles in its music-quote collection. The sentence is direct about music’s capacity to move listeners, without claiming that everyone responds in the same way.
Music as comfort and companionship
Taylor Swift on music’s reliability
“People haven’t always been there for me, but music always has.”

Parade attributes this line to Taylor Swift. It presents music as a steady companion during loneliness, a personal perspective rather than a promise that music can replace human support.
Music, memory, and imagination
Mark Twain on music’s conjuring power
“Ah, that shows you the power of music, that magician of magician, who lifts his wand and says his mysterious word and all things real pass away and the phantoms of your mind walk before you clothed in flesh.”

Chuck Brown Music prints this passage under Mark Twain’s name in its music-quote roundup. The image describes music as making imagined scenes vivid. The roundup is a secondary source, so it does not by itself establish where Twain originally wrote or said the passage.
Music and the work of creation
Nadia Boulanger on learning and invention
“To study music, we must learn the rules. To create music, we must break them.”

A Sam Houston State University handout hosted by The Midwest Clinic attributes this line to Nadia Boulanger. It captures a useful tension in creative practice: knowledge of conventions can provide the grounding for making something new. The handout is an educational selection, not an original Boulanger source.
Virgil Thomson on music as a vocation
“I’ve never known a musician who regretted being one. Whatever deceptions life may have in store for you, music itself is not going to let you down.”

The same handout attributes this reflection to composer Virgil Thomson. It speaks to the sustaining value music may have for a musician; it is a personal conviction, not a guarantee that a career in music will be free of difficulty.

A quotation is more useful when its attribution is as reliable as its wording. Collections such as Parade’s 2025 list, the University of Wisconsin–Madison collection, the Sam Houston State University handout hosted by The Midwest Clinic, and Chuck Brown Music’s roundup are helpful places to encounter sayings, but secondary compilations do not verify every line’s original context. For a speech, publication, or classroom handout, check the cited author’s original work, interview, speech, or official transcript where possible. If you cannot confirm it, say which collection attributes the words rather than presenting the attribution as settled fact.

These five lines touch on response, comfort, imagination, creative discipline, and commitment. They do not establish a scientific measure of music’s effects; they are individual statements about what song can mean.
