The best interactive museum in Chicago depends on what your child wants to do: play pretend, explore science, see animals, look at space, or investigate dinosaurs and nature. For younger children drawn to hands-on play, start with Chicago Children’s Museum; for science and technology, consider Griffin Museum of Science and Industry; and for a Museum Campus day, choose among Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, and the Field Museum according to your child’s interests.
Choose by interest and location
| Museum | A good fit for | Area and planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Chicago Children’s Museum | Playful, participatory exhibits, especially for younger children | Navy Pier; a distinct outing from the Museum Campus museums |
| Griffin Museum of Science and Industry | Science, technology, and interactive attractions | Hyde Park; plan it as its own outing rather than grouping it with the Museum Campus cluster |
| Shedd Aquarium | Aquatic life and animal encounters | Museum Campus; advance booking is advised by Shedd |
| Adler Planetarium | Space and astronomy, with family-oriented exhibit areas | Museum Campus; ticket options include general admission and a family Star Pass |
| Field Museum | Dinosaurs, animals, rocks and gems, and cultural history | Museum Campus; check the current calendar and entry details before traveling |
| Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum | A nature-focused museum visit | Lincoln Park; check current child-facing exhibits before deciding |
Adler, Shedd, and the Field Museum share the Museum Campus area, which can simplify transport for a family planning more than one visit. They are substantial destinations, though, and trying to fit all three into one day may leave little time to explore each. The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is in Hyde Park, not in that cluster.
For younger children who want to play: Chicago Children’s Museum
What makes it a fit
At Navy Pier, Chicago Children’s Museum is a natural choice when the priority is playful participation rather than a mainly observational museum visit. Choose Chicago’s family guide names exhibits including Treehouse Trails, Water City, and Dinosaur Expedition.
Plan around your child’s kind of play
Those exhibit themes offer different ways into a visit: movement and imaginative exploration, water-focused play, or a dinosaur theme. If your child’s main request is somewhere they can play, this is the most directly aligned option on the list. Check the museum’s current exhibit and visit information before you go; the available details here do not establish current hours, admission, or exhibit availability.

For science and technology: Griffin Museum of Science and Industry
What makes it a fit
Choose Chicago describes the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry as filled with interactive exhibits. Its family guide highlights a tornado experience, a submarine, and a coal mine, making it a strong match for children who like large-scale demonstrations, engineering, or seeing how things work.
Plan it as a separate trip
The museum is in Hyde Park, away from the Adler–Shedd–Field Museum Campus group. Treat it as a separate outing when mapping travel rather than assuming it can be added easily to a Museum Campus day. The details available here do not establish current hours, admission, or which attractions are operating on a particular date, so confirm those with the museum before setting out.

For aquatic animals: Shedd Aquarium
What makes it a fit
Shedd suits children whose curiosity centers on animals and aquatic life. Choose Chicago highlights the Stingray Touch, and Shedd’s visitor information lists animal spotlights. These features make the aquarium an animal-focused option within the Museum Campus cluster.
Book and pace the visit
Shedd advises visitors to book in advance. Its visitor page says admission prices vary for adults and children ages 3–11; check the current booking page for the applicable price and availability for your visit date. If you are combining Shedd with another Museum Campus museum, leave enough time for each rather than treating proximity as a reason to rush through both.

These are prices listed on that page, not a guarantee of the amount your household will pay; check current ticket terms and availability before purchasing. The page also describes CityPASS as including Adler and a selection of other attractions, so families considering a multi-attraction pass should confirm the current inclusions and compare them with the visits they actually plan.

For a nature-focused visit: Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum
What makes it a fit
In Lincoln Park, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is the shortlist’s nature-oriented alternative. Choose Chicago includes it in museum listings and family recommendations. The available details do not establish which child-facing exhibits are currently on view, so review the museum’s current visitor information before choosing it for a particular activity or age group.
Quick Recap
How to make the choice
- Choose the activity first. Play points toward Chicago Children’s Museum; science and technology toward Griffin MSI; aquatic animals toward Shedd; space toward Adler; and dinosaurs, rocks, or broader natural history toward the Field Museum. Peggy Notebaert is the nature-focused alternative.
- Use geography to shape the day. Adler, Shedd, and the Field Museum are together on Museum Campus. Griffin MSI is in Hyde Park, while Chicago Children’s Museum is at Navy Pier and Peggy Notebaert is in Lincoln Park.
- Check the practical details for your date. Confirm current exhibits, hours, ticket terms, and any booking requirements on the venue’s own visitor pages. Shedd specifically recommends advance booking; the other details can also change.
- Keep the itinerary realistic. Nearby museums are easier to group geographically, but proximity does not mean a child will have the time or energy to enjoy several full visits in one day.
