Their exits were not alike: some characters received clear storylines, while several actors’ reasons were never publicly explained. “Major” is a judgment about prominence, not an official category.
Blue Bloods followed a multigenerational New York City law-enforcement family from 2010 to 2024. The Reagan core—Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Len Cariou and Tom Selleck—remained throughout its 14-season run, while other colleagues and family members came and went. CBS describes Frank as police commissioner, Danny as a detective, Erin as an assistant district attorney, Nicky as Erin’s daughter and Jamie as a Reagan who joins the police force. CBS’s series page

Which major Blue Bloods cast members left, and why?
Jennifer Esposito as Detective Jackie Curatola
Esposito left midway through season three. On screen, Jackie took a leave of absence to deal with stress. The real-world explanation was disputed: CBS said she was available only part-time, while Esposito said her doctor required a reduced schedule because of her celiac disease diagnosis. She also said CBS placed her on unpaid leave and prevented her from working elsewhere. Those statements describe competing accounts, not a single settled explanation. Esposito later returned as a guest star in the final two seasons.
Amy Carlson as Linda Reagan
Carlson’s seven-year contract ended, and she did not renew it. Linda was killed in a helicopter crash between seasons seven and eight; the story later revealed the crash was not an accident. After the season-eight premiere, executive producer Kevin Wade said, “Amy decided to move on,” and “I was very surprised.”

Sami Gayle as Nicky Reagan-Boyle
Gayle stepped back from the role after ten seasons, and no official reason was given. She graduated from Wharton with an MBA in 2023 while starring in the Broadway production Bad Cinderella, but those facts do not establish why her role diminished.
David Ramsey as Mayor Carter Poole
Poole resigned as mayor at the end of season seven, and the reason Ramsey left the recurring role remains unknown publicly. Ramsey was also working in the Arrowverse, but suggestions that travel between New York and Vancouver contributed are speculation, not a confirmed explanation.
Nicholas Turturro as Sergeant Anthony Renzulli
Renzulli was a near-constant presence in the first three seasons. Turturro then appeared once in each of seasons four, five and six before disappearing from the story. Turturro, the producers and the network did not publicly explain the change. Turturro did urge followers to ask CBS for more Renzulli.
Flex Alexander as Detective DeMarcus King
Alexander played Danny’s partner in the pilot, but the character did not continue into the series. In a 2010 UrbanBridgez.com interview, as reported by TV Insider, Alexander said the show opted for a female partner for Danny: “It didn’t have anything to do with me or my skills.”

How to read the different kinds of exits
A character’s departure from the story does not necessarily tell viewers why an actor left—or whether the actor chose to leave. In this group, Carlson’s non-renewed contract and Esposito’s competing public accounts are the clearest explanations. For Gayle, Ramsey and Turturro, the cited coverage does not establish a public reason; Alexander described a casting choice after the pilot. Treating education, other acting work or geography as a confirmed motive would go beyond what has been reported.
The six-person list is one defensible selection, not a definitive ranking. If “major” includes a brief early-series regular, Dylan Moore is another possible choice: TV Insider says she was cut after episode eight, but that her reason was not made public.
