You can watch it without knowing the long-running Ultraman franchise: director and co-writer Shannon Tindle says, “You don’t have to know anything about Ultraman to enjoy this movie.”
1. You can start without knowing Ultraman
The film offers a reimagined version of the hero, with its own take on the character and new enemies. Tindle told Netflix Tudum in its June 14, 2024 guide that newcomers do not need franchise background to enjoy it.
2. What’s Ultraman: Rising about?
Baseball star Ken Sato returns to Japan and takes on the mantle of Ultraman as Tokyo faces kaiju attacks. After confronting Gigantron, he finds himself caring for her baby, Emi. That responsibility complicates his relationship with his estranged father and puts him at odds with the Kaiju Defense Force.
Netflix describes Emi as a 35-foot-tall baby kaiju—a fictional character detail, not a real-world measurement. The premise turns the usual monster-fighting assignment into a personal test for Ken.

3. Expect monster action and a family story
The film combines animated kaiju spectacle with themes of parenthood and family. Ken must learn to take responsibility and grow beyond his ego while balancing the threat to Tokyo with caring for Emi. Netflix presents it as a family movie, and Tsuburaya Productions likewise highlights parenthood and family among its themes.
4. Who’s in the cast of Ultraman: Rising?
| Character | English voice actor |
|---|---|
| Ken Sato / Ultraman | Christopher Sean |
| Professor Sato | Gedde Watanabe |
| Emiko Sato | Tamlyn Tomita |

Shannon Tindle wrote and directed the film, Marc Haimes co-wrote it, and John Aoshima co-directed it. Netflix, Tsuburaya Productions and Industrial Light & Magic are identified as partners; ILM created the CG animation. Tsuburaya’s June 14, 2024 release announcement also credits Tom Knott and Lisa M. Poole as producers and Diplo for the music.
