Blumhouse and director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man brings Universal’s werewolf premise into a contemporary family-horror story. Christopher Abbott plays Blake, a husband and father whose family takes shelter from a creature outside their rural Oregon home—and then faces a threat from within. Here are six useful things to know, from the cast and creature effects to the film’s home-media editions.

1. It updates a classic Universal monster premise

Released in 2025, Wolf Man is directed by Leigh Whannell, whose film places the werewolf story in the present day. The official trailer introduces Blake, a San Francisco husband and father who takes his wife and daughter to the childhood home he inherited in rural Oregon. After an animal attack, his injuries and behavior begin to worsen.

The film updates the premise associated with Universal’s 1941 werewolf classic; it is not presented as a scene-for-scene remake. The BFI interview with Whannell also notes the influence of An American Werewolf in London.

2. The family’s confinement drives the story

Blake, his wife Charlotte and their daughter Ginger barricade themselves inside as an unseen creature stays outside. The family’s confinement is only part of the danger: Charlotte must protect Ginger while Blake’s condition makes the house increasingly threatening. Universal’s official synopsis lays out this spoiler-light setup.

3. Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner and Matilda Firth lead the cast

Abbott plays Blake, Garner plays Charlotte and Firth plays Ginger. Universal’s cast listing also names Sam Jaeger and Benedict Hardie. The official trailer description additionally lists Ben Prendergast.

Whannell and Corbett Tuck are credited with screenplay work, alongside Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, according to the trailer credits.

4. Practical makeup was central to the creature design

Whannell told the BFI that he made prosthetic makeup the primary approach to Blake’s transformation. He explained: “When I’m doing a werewolf movie, the only choice was make-up, because not only do I think visual effects would look wrong, but it would be too much money and time to do something on that scale of visual effects to track something on to an actor’s face.”

That does not mean the film relied on makeup alone. Universal’s home-release feature list describes a combination of practical effects, sound design and visual effects used to represent Blake’s changing perceptions.

5. Whannell connected the story to infection, isolation and parenting

In his BFI interview, Whannell said he and co-writer Corbett Tuck wrote the first draft in 2020 during COVID lockdown. He connected that period’s anxiety about infection and isolation, as well as his own difficulties parenting, to the film’s concern with protecting children. That is the director’s account of his influences, not a claim that the story is literally about COVID.

As Whannell put it: “It’s not just about infection, it’s about parenting, feeling like you’re failing at parenting and trying to protect your kids from something.”

6. It is available on digital and physical home media

Universal’s February 3, 2025 home-entertainment announcement said digital purchase or rental would begin February 4, with 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD editions scheduled for March 18. Universal’s current title page lists digital purchase or rental and physical formats, including a Collector’s Edition combining 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and Digital. Availability and editions can vary by market and retailer.

Universal lists “over 30 minutes” of behind-the-scenes material. The extras include features on creature design, practical effects and soundscapes, as well as director commentary. For someone looking specifically for a Wolf Man 2025 Blu-ray, Universal confirms a standard Blu-ray format and the Collector’s Edition bundle; check the retailer’s listing for the contents of a particular edition.

Runtime and rating

Universal lists the film at 1 hour 42 minutes and gives it a U.S. R rating for “bloody violent content, grisly images and some language.” The Associated Press review lists a runtime of 103 minutes. The sources do not explain the difference, so use Universal’s figure as the studio’s stated runtime rather than treating the two listings as identical.
