A useful all-time list should instead make its standards clear: historical influence, storytelling craft, lasting reputation, range of genres and readers, accessibility for newcomers, and documented recognition. This guide uses those criteria to help readers discover manga and choose a place to begin—not to claim that one definitive set of 55 titles has been established.
What makes a manga one of the best of all time?
“Best” can mean different things: a work may have changed the medium, built a devoted readership, shaped later creators, or offered an unusually compelling story. Those measures overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Awards record the judgment of a particular panel or institution; publisher histories document how a company describes its own catalogue. Neither proves an objective verdict.
A defensible selection weighs several kinds of evidence rather than treating popularity or prizes as a complete answer:
- Historical and cultural influence: whether a work helped introduce manga to new readers or is identified as influential in comics history.
- Storytelling and form: how effectively the work uses serial pacing, visual composition, character development, and its chosen genre.
- Reputation over time: whether readers and critics continue to discuss it beyond its original publication moment.
- Range: whether the selection represents the medium’s different genres and audiences instead of a single kind of action series or literary drama.
- Accessibility: whether a newcomer can enter the story without extensive background knowledge, and whether a clear first volume is available in the reader’s market.
- Documented recognition: awards and other attributable records, considered in the context of who selected them and what they recognize.
For example, Dark Horse’s 2013 guide describes Lone Wolf and Cub, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Trigun, Astro Boy, and Gantz as influential Japanese titles in comics history. That is a publisher’s characterization, useful as one historical signal rather than a universal ranking. The same guide reports that Lone Wolf and Cub would eventually sell over a million copies for Dark Horse in the United States; that is Dark Horse’s own historical US sales figure, not a worldwide total or an independently audited market statistic. How to choose a first manga
Start with the kind of experience you want, not with the assumption that every famous manga is the right first read. A short, complete story offers a different commitment from a long-running series; a historical adventure feels different from science fiction or comedy. Before picking up a volume, check the series’ genre, intended audience, length, completion status, and the availability of a suitable translation in your region.
- Pick a genre or tone. Decide whether you want action, romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, humor, or a quieter character-driven story.
- Choose your commitment. Look for a standalone or completed work if you want a defined ending; choose an ongoing or long series only if you are comfortable following it over time.
- Check the reading entry point. For a series, begin with the first volume in the edition you can access. Confirm that it is volume 1, in a language you read, and not a later omnibus or alternate edition that changes the numbering.
- Consider content and audience. Read a publisher description or sample pages if age suitability, violence, sexual content, or other themes matter to you.
- Try before committing. A library, bookseller preview, or sample chapter can help you tell whether the art and pacing work for you.
What manga audience labels mean—and what they do not
Labels such as shōnen, shōjo, seinen, and josei often describe the intended readership or publishing category associated with a work. Scholastic’s manga guide presents shōnen and shōjo as traditional tween and teen audience categories, and seinen and josei as older-teen or adult categories, while emphasizing the breadth of manga story types. These conventions can help readers navigate a catalogue, but they are not rules about who is allowed to enjoy a particular story. See Scholastic’s manga reading guide.

Genre and content are more useful for an individual choice than the demographic label alone. A reader drawn to romance, sports, mystery, or historical fiction may find an appealing series in several categories. Check the actual description and content rather than assuming that a label tells you everything about the story.
How awards and publisher histories can guide a list
Award records can show that a work received recognition within a defined competition. Shogakukan’s official archive lists past Shogakukan Manga Award winners and creators, including works from different magazines and, in some cases, other publishing houses. The archive is valuable for checking a specific award and year; it does not make the award a neutral or comprehensive measure of all manga. Browse the Shogakukan Manga Award archive.

The Japan International MANGA Award has a different stated purpose: Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it was established to promote international exchange and mutual understanding through manga and to recognize creators contributing to manga’s spread overseas. Publisher histories have their own perspective, too. In Dark Horse’s 2013 guide, publisher Mike Richardson describes the company’s early move into Japanese comics as predating the manga craze and says it was not motivated by a chance to cash in on that craze. Finding the right edition
For a first read, a printed first volume or a collected edition is often a straightforward way to test a series. Editions can differ by translation, format, numbering, and regional availability, so check the publisher’s listing or a local bookseller before buying. A historical mention of a title does not establish its current stock, price, or edition in your country.
For instance, Dark Horse’s guide names Akira as an influential title, but its 2013 publication cannot establish what edition is currently available or in stock. Verify the language, volume, and regional edition before selecting a copy.
