The 50-years-ago anniversary in the original headline refers to 15 December 2023, not today. Her entrance as a journalist who secretly boards the TARDIS set up a character whose investigations would eventually take place with and without the Doctor.
When did Sarah Jane Smith first appear?
Sarah Jane’s first regular appearance was in The Time Warrior, a four-part story written by Robert Holmes. The BBC’s episode record lists Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane and Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor. Its episodes aired weekly from 15 December 1973 through 5 January 1974: BBC Studios: The Time Warrior.
| Episode | Original broadcast |
|---|---|
| 1 | 15 December 1973 |
| 2 | 22 December 1973 |
| 3 | 29 December 1973 |
| 4 | 5 January 1974 |
The anniversary wording is therefore date-specific: “50 years ago today” was accurate on the first episode’s 50th anniversary in 2023. The serial also introduced the Sontarans to the programme, according to the BBC’s retrospective, “A brief history of the Sontarans” (2 November 2021).
How Sarah Jane enters the story
The Third Doctor is asked by UNIT to investigate missing scientists at a high-security institute. The trail leads to the Middle Ages, where the Sontaran Linx is abducting scientists from the future to repair his damaged spacecraft and change humanity’s future. Sarah Jane is at the institute as an investigative journalist, pursuing the story. She secretly boards the TARDIS without the Doctor’s knowledge.

That choice matters to the character’s introduction. Sarah Jane does not simply arrive as a passenger waiting for the Doctor to explain events. She has a profession, a lead she wants to follow and the initiative to act on it. The official BBC synopsis establishes that premise; the claim that it helps explain her lasting appeal is an interpretation of how the story gives her agency from the outset.
How Sarah Jane’s role changed across eras
A companion who stayed through a regeneration
Sarah Jane’s adventures continued beyond the Third Doctor’s era. The BBC’s Sarah Jane Smith profile describes her travelling with the Doctor after his regeneration into his Fourth incarnation. That continuity gave the character a connection across a major transition in the programme, rather than limiting her story to one Doctor.

A returning ally with her own perspective
When Sarah Jane later encounters the Tenth Doctor at Deffry Vale School, she is no longer simply the journalist who stowed away. She has a life and experience of her own, and she meets the Doctor as a returning ally. The BBC profile places her first regular appearance in The Time Warrior and her last regular appearance in The End of Time Part 2.
An investigator on Bannerman Road
Her later adventures extended that independence. The BBC profile describes Sarah Jane investigating alien incursions from Bannerman Road and building a family with her adopted son Luke and his friends. In The Sarah Jane Adventures, she could lead the investigation rather than serving only as the Doctor’s companion. That expansion is the strongest concrete basis for saying she changed the shape of her place in the franchise: a character introduced by following the Doctor’s story became the centre of stories of her own.
What “changed Doctor Who forever” can—and cannot—mean
It is fair to call Sarah Jane an enduring franchise touchstone: she made the journey from investigative journalist in the 1970s, to a companion across two Doctors, to a returning ally and independent investigator. The BBC’s “Farewell, Sarah Jane” remembrance (19 April 2020) includes a tribute scripted by Russell T Davies and narrated by Jacob Dudman, further evidence of her continued place in the programme’s history.
Rank #3
“Changed Doctor Who forever” is an argument about her narrative legacy, not a measurable result. The available official material does not quantify her effect on viewers or establish her as the first independent or feminist companion. What it does show is a character whose agency remained central as her role grew beyond the TARDIS.
