What are the best movies of the 2020s so far? This ranked selection treats “greatest” as an editorial judgment, not a settled consensus. It brings together fiction and documentary, animation and live action, films from different national cinemas, and work with very different levels of commercial visibility.
The ranking uses annual Sight and Sound critics’ lists from 2020 through the latest complete year as a discovery and cross-checking tool—not as a decade ranking. Each selection is judged for formal ambition, performances, storytelling, emotional or intellectual effect, cultural reach, and staying power. Release-year eligibility can differ by territory: there is no single cross-territory rule here for whether a film belongs to a year because of a festival premiere or its public release.

Important: the available evidence supports a thoughtful method, but does not establish a verified set of 50 titles or their decade-wide order. Rather than invent a ranking, this article explains what the cited lists can—and cannot—support.
Why there is no defensible ranked list of 50 here
The cited material provides a framework and a shortlist source, not the final 50-film selection. It identifies BFI/Sight and Sound annual lists for 2024 and 2025, plus context about the 2022 and 2023 lists, but it does not provide the titles and evidence needed to compare and rank 50 films across the decade. Naming films from memory would turn an evidence-based assignment into an unsupported list.
#1 Best Overall
Annual critics’ selections are useful for discovering films and tracking critical reception, but they are not interchangeable with a decade-wide vote. The BFI says the 2022 Sight and Sound annual top 50 was voted for by 93 UK and international contributors; its 2023 list was voted for by more than 100 contributors. Those are contributor counts for separate annual selections, not audience polling or proof of a definitive ranking. BFI: 2022 annual list · BFI: 2023 annual list
What the annual lists tell us about breadth
The BFI’s 2022 list describes a selection spanning fiction and documentary, live action and animation, films from every continent, large-scale action, adventurous genre work, and arthouse cinema. Its 2023 introduction likewise makes the case for looking beyond films with the largest marketing budgets. That is a useful corrective for a list of “greatest” movies: cultural visibility and commercial scale are not the same as artistic achievement.

The 2024 and 2025 Sight and Sound pages offer recent ranked annual selections and film-by-film commentary. They can help identify candidates, but an annual position should not be carried over as a decade rank. BFI: 2024 annual list · BFI: 2025 annual list The BFI’s separate 2022 Greatest Films of All Time poll drew votes from more than 1,600 critics, programmers, curators, academics, and archivists; it is an all-time poll, not a ranking of 2020s movies. How a credible 2020s ranking should be made
- Build a candidate pool. Start with annual critics’ lists from 2020 through the latest complete year, then cross-check for films and filmmaking traditions that may be underrepresented in highly visible roundups.
- Set the year rule. State whether eligibility follows a festival premiere, a public release, or another clearly defined date. Because qualifying dates vary across territories, apply the chosen rule consistently and identify exceptions.
- Compare films on declared criteria. Assess distinctive use of image, sound, editing, or structure; performance and dramatic construction; emotional or intellectual force; cultural reach; and resonance beyond the initial release and awards cycle. These are editorial criteria, not an official BFI scoring system.
- Make the ranking accountable. Explain meaningful close calls and distinguish a critic-list appearance from the editorial reasons for placing a film above another.
A documented example: Possessor
The BFI describes Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor as science fiction centred on an assassin who inhabits other people’s bodies. Its page records a Blu-ray and DVD release on 8 February 2021. That establishes a past physical-media release, not present stock or the film’s eligibility under any particular public-release rule. BFI: Possessor

What this means for readers
There is no single institutionally established answer to “What are the greatest movies of the 2020s?” in the cited evidence. Sight and Sound’s annual lists are one informed route into the decade’s cinema, not a substitute for a published, consistently eligible decade ranking. A credible top 50 needs its actual film choices, year-by-year eligibility decisions, and comparative reasoning—not just a list of annual poll placements.
