John Lennon and Yoko Ono released “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” on 1 December 1971. Recorded with the Plastic Ono Band and Harlem Community Choir, it pairs a familiar Christmas-song form with a stark political refrain: “War is over if you want it.” Its enduring force lies in the tension between seasonal warmth and a demand that listeners recognize their own agency—not in any established ranking as the “boldest” anti-war song ever written.
Who wrote “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”?
John Lennon and Yoko Ono co-wrote the song. Lennon and Ono are credited as producers alongside Phil Spector; the recording is credited to John & Yoko / the Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir. The official John Lennon song page recounts that Ono remembered the idea taking shape over breakfast in New York in July 1971. Lennon recalled it in November and asked his manager to get it released for Christmas.
When was it released, and what was on the B-side?
The single came out on 1 December 1971. Apple Music also lists the release date and performers, corroborating the official artist-page details: Apple Music’s listing for the single. The original B-side was Ono’s “Listen, The Snow Is Falling.”
What does “War is over if you want it” mean?
Lennon described the slogan as a message about shared responsibility and personal agency. The official song page quotes him: “It was still that same message – the idea that we’re just as responsible as the man who pushes the button.” He also argued that people should not assume someone else has taken away their power or made them go to war. In this framing, the refrain asks listeners to see themselves as participants in political choices, not merely spectators.

The song gives that appeal a distinctly seasonal setting. Greetings and hopes for a new year sit alongside lines addressed across differences of strength, wealth, race and political division. The contrast makes the refrain easy to remember and sing, while keeping its political challenge in view. That is an interpretation of the lyrics and Lennon’s stated intent; it does not mean the song ended a particular conflict.
Why is it considered an anti-war Christmas song?
Its central device is the combination of an accessible holiday-song structure with a direct anti-war message. The choir and communal refrain invite participation; the words turn that communal feeling toward responsibility and peace. The song does not hide its argument inside metaphor: its title and repeated slogan state it plainly.
Calling it the “greatest” Christmas rock hit or the “boldest” anti-war song ever written is a matter of critical judgment, not a verifiable ranking established by the available sources. A more grounded case for its significance rests on the collaboration between Lennon and Ono, its memorable refrain, and the way its holiday form carries an explicitly political appeal.
How was the song received after release?
The official John Lennon page describes the first release as a commercial failure and says the song “only became big after John’s passing in 1980.” That is the site’s retrospective summary; it does not provide chart positions or a detailed chart history. No precise peak or ranking should be inferred from it.
