His public profile was built on years of work with athletes, not just his television appearance. In 2018, he led Laney to a community-college championship, the Los Angeles Times reported.
How was John Beam connected to Last Chance U?
Season 5 of Last Chance U, released in 2020, followed Laney College’s football program and its athletes. Beam appeared as the Eagles’ coach, bringing the series’ focus on junior-college football into an Oakland community-college setting. The season’s connection to Beam is specific: it documented the Laney program he led, rather than his entire coaching career. The Associated Press and KQED coverage identified the season and its release year.

What happened at Laney College?
Beam was shot on the Laney College campus in Oakland on November 13, 2025. He died on November 14, according to contemporaneous reporting by KQED. The incident took place in Oakland, California.
A suspect was arrested on November 14. On November 17, the Associated Press reported that Cedric Irving Jr. had been charged with murder. That is a dated account of the charge; the available reporting does not establish the case’s later disposition. A charge is an accusation, not a finding of guilt.

How did Oakland remember Beam?
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee called Beam “a giant in Oakland” and described him as “a mentor, an educator, and a lifeline for thousands of young people,” according to the Associated Press’s November 14, 2025 report. “Thousands” is the mayor’s characterization of his impact, not an independently audited count.
That tribute reflects the broader significance of Beam’s career: he coached and mentored young people in the Oakland area over decades, while leading Laney’s football program to a championship and later introducing the team to viewers through Last Chance U.
