“50 Greatest ‘Saturday Night Live’ Sketches of All Time” is the title of a Rolling Stone retrospective published on February 3, 2014. It is best read as that magazine’s editorial selection—not an official SNL ranking, a public vote, or a measured consensus. Its date is part of the story: it reflects a view of the show up to 2014, not work from later seasons.
What the title refers to
The title refers to a Rolling Stone list of 50 SNL sketches. The available record establishes the publication date, February 3, 2014, and identifies the piece as a retrospective. It does not establish a formal scoring system, a surveyed electorate, or a repeatable definition of “greatest.” A numbered position in the list should therefore be understood as an editorial placement.

How to read “greatest” in this context
“Greatest” is a judgment, not a claim that the sketches were tested against an agreed standard. The ranking can still be useful: it offers a magazine’s perspective on memorable work from the show’s history. But a placement does not, by itself, demonstrate that viewers voted for a sketch or that critics reached a consensus.
What counts as an SNL sketch
Retrospectives can draw from more than one kind of SNL segment. A separate Complex retrospective, published February 14, 2015, describes a scope that includes commercials, digital shorts, impressions, game shows, political satire, and celebrity appearances. That range helps explain why a “greatest sketches” list need not be limited to one recurring character or one kind of live scene. The Complex list is an independent editorial selection, not evidence of a shared ranking or method.

Why the date matters
A list published in 2014 is a snapshot of the show as it stood then. It cannot include sketches made in later seasons, and its choices should not be presented as a current, definitive consensus. When comparing it with another retrospective, check the publication date, the range of formats considered, and whether the list explains how its selections were made.

“More Cowbell” is closely associated with the cowbell itself; an academic dissertation discussing the sketch notes that association and cites its placement at number nine in the Rolling Stone list. That is a useful illustration of how a prop or repeated phrase can become the shorthand by which viewers remember a sketch. The number nine remains the magazine’s ranking, not a vote count or audience measurement.
