5 Best Golden Globes Hosts Ever—and 5 of the Worst

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler set a high bar, Nikki Glaser made a strong recent case, and Jo Koy’s 2024 turn stands out among the weakest. Here’s an argued ranking—not an official scorecard.

There is no official scorecard for Golden Globes hosting, so “best” and “worst” depend on what a host is asked to do: land jokes that suit a live broadcast, connect with a room full of nominees, keep the ceremony moving, and make an awards show feel like a party without turning it into a show about the host. By those standards, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are a standout team, Nikki Glaser is a strong recent contender, and Jo Koy’s 2024 turn and Ricky Gervais’s 2016 performance belong among the weakest. The rankings below are an argued selection, not a universal consensus.

How this ranking judges a Golden Globes host

The Globes combine awards, comedy, celebrity roast and a dinner-party atmosphere. A joke can work in a comedy club but feel misplaced in a broadcast, while a daring monologue can fall flat if it leaves the room—or the audience—behind. This list weighs five things: joke quality and fit for television, rapport with the room, pacing and energy, the sense of occasion, and whether the host leaves space for the nominees and awards.

The ceremony’s hosting history also has gaps. The official Golden Globes retrospective says John Larroquette and Janine Turner hosted in 1995, followed by 15 years without hosts; Ricky Gervais revived the practice in 2010. Fey and Poehler hosted together from 2013 through 2015 and returned in 2021. Those shifts make it more useful to judge particular performances than to treat every host’s career as one continuous verdict. The official Golden Globes retrospective provides the timeline.

Five of the best Golden Globes hosts

1. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (2013–2015; returned in 2021)

Fey and Poehler are the clearest choice for the top spot because their pairing balanced sharp jokes with the warmth and ease the Globes need. They could tease celebrities without making the room feel hostile, and their shared rhythm kept the opening lively. The official Golden Globes retrospective describes them as very popular co-hosts.

  • TRIVIA CATEGORIES: Movie Trivia Game includes the following categories: Comedy/Animation, Action/Adventure, Drama/Musical, and Horror/Sci-Fi.
  • INCLUDES: 110 Double-sided cards (880 questions), Score pad, Pencil, Instructions.

That reputation was visible in the response to their first ceremony. ABC News gave their 2013 hosting an A, describing an opening that mixed good-natured ribbing with biting commentary and concluding, “We only wish there’d been more of them.” Their success was not an accident of spontaneity alone: Fey later described preparing lists of facts, writing multiple jokes on each subject and putting the material in order. The contemporaneous review and Fey’s account appear in ABC News’ 2013 review and the official retrospective.

2. Nikki Glaser (2025)

Glaser made a strong case for herself as a recent standout by bringing roast-comedy instincts to a ceremony without letting the material overpower the broadcast. TIME praised her referential, tightly controlled monologue and her calibration of a spicy style for a television audience. That makes her a leading recent candidate, not proof of a settled all-time consensus. TIME’s review of the 2025 ceremony discusses her approach.

3. Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg (2019)

The official host history identifies Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg among the later Golden Globes hosts. Their joint turn earns a place here as a pairing that brought two distinct comic sensibilities to the same stage: a useful fit for a show that needs both personality and a light touch. This placement is an editorial judgment rather than a claim that critics or viewers have agreed on a definitive ranking; the official retrospective establishes their place in the ceremony’s hosting history. 4. Seth Meyers (2018)

Seth Meyers is another defensible choice for the best five: a seasoned monologue performer whose hosting sits naturally within a ceremony built around jokes about the people in the room. The official history lists him among the later hosts. The case for including him here rests on the job’s demands—clear delivery, controlled pacing and the ability to keep a monologue from swallowing the awards—not on a published score or universal verdict. The official retrospective records his hosting turn.

5. Ricky Gervais (2010–2012 and 2020, considered separately from 2016)

Gervais belongs among the most consequential modern hosts because he helped bring hosting back to the Globes in 2010 and returned in 2011, 2012 and 2016; he also hosted in 2020. His confrontational style can give the ceremony an edge, and his record should not be reduced to one night. This list gives him a place among the best for the impact of his earlier hosting era, while treating his 2016 performance separately below. The official retrospective documents the modern hosting timeline: Golden Globe Hosts Set the Tone.

Five of the weakest Golden Globes hosting performances

This is a ranking of performances, not a judgment on the hosts’ entire careers. The evidence for the lowest placements is strongest for Jo Koy in 2024 and Gervais in 2016; the remaining selections reflect the same criteria but are more interpretive. A poor hosting night does not establish that every performance by that person was poor.

Brass Monkey - Poorly Explained Movies Party Trivia Game
  • How to Play: Compete with your friends to identify popular movies from the most convoluted movie summaries possible. Has your mom ever tried to explain a film that she just watched? Did it make one ounce of sense? Of course not–and that’s precisely the inspiration for this game. For example: A goose suddenly dies and it makes everyone really depressed. Psst, it’s 'Top Gun’.
  • Package Includes: Features 125 game cards–each featuring a uniquely-terrible description of a movie. Includes instructions for two distinct ways to play (competitive & casual). Suitable for 2 to 8 players.
  • Perfect for parties: Brass Monkey’s “Poorly Explained Movies Game” is the perfect party game to make sure everyone has a great time, bring it to your next college dorm game night, happy hour, or even bachelor/bachelorette party and see for yourself.
  • Gift Ideas: Ideal gift for birthdays, graduation, holiday gifts, and Christmas

1. Jo Koy (2024)

Koy’s opening is the clearest recent example of jokes and delivery failing to find a comfortable fit with the room. The Associated Press reported that critics slammed the fumbled opening and rushed pace; TIME described the jokes as ill-suited to the broadcast and said he seemed underprepared. The Guardian likewise treated the appearance as a conspicuous failure. These are reviewers’ assessments, not evidence that every viewer reacted the same way. The Associated Press report, The Guardian’s review and TIME’s discussion of the 2024 hosting failure document that critical response.

2. Ricky Gervais (2016)

Gervais’s 2016 ceremony shows why the host should be judged night by night. In a contemporaneous review, TIME critic Daniel D’Addario argued that Gervais’s scorn drained energy from the event, contrasting the ceremony with the preceding Fey–Poehler years. The review called the evening “just a bore.” That is a critic’s verdict on this performance—not a summary of Gervais’s entire hosting history. Read TIME’s 2016 review.

3. Ricky Gervais’s confrontational approach when the room needs warmth

Separate from any single ceremony, Gervais’s roast-first style can be a poor match when it makes the audience feel like a target rather than a partner in the joke. The 2016 review offers a concrete example of the risk: cutting material can lose its comic charge when the performance drains the evening’s energy. This entry concerns that mismatch, not a claim that all of his Globes appearances failed.

4. A host who prioritizes the monologue over the ceremony

A Golden Globes host can win a laugh and still weaken the show if the opening becomes the whole event. When jokes repeatedly pull attention away from nominees and awards, the ceremony loses the celebratory balance that makes the Globes distinct. This is a judgment about the format’s demands rather than an additional, source-backed verdict on a named host.

5. A host whose pacing leaves the room behind

Rushed delivery, awkward transitions or jokes that do not land can make even a promising opening feel uncomfortable. Koy’s 2024 turn is already the strongest documented example on this list; this final slot names the failure mode rather than inventing a separate historical ranking unsupported by the cited coverage.

Why a single all-time ranking has limits

The Golden Globes do not publish an objective host-quality measure. Audience ratings cannot fill that gap: the 2012 announcement reported a 5.0 rating among adults 18–49 and 16.9 million viewers, excluding sports, but those figures measure the telecast’s audience, not the quality of the hosts or their causal effect on viewership. The numbers were reported by NBC in the official announcement of Fey and Poehler’s 70th-ceremony booking.

Nor should one outlet’s review stand in for universal agreement. Fey and Poehler have unusually clear support in the official retrospective and a positive contemporaneous review; Glaser’s reception is recent and favorable in TIME; and Koy’s and Gervais’s cited placements reflect specific critical responses to particular nights. The remaining placements are reasoned picks, not a claim of consensus.

Hosts themselves have described the balance the job requires. In the official retrospective, Jimmy Fallon said, “The show is more about the people who are nominated and just letting them look good, all the glitz and glamor.” That is a useful standard for judging any ceremony: comedy should animate the awards, not displace them.
