To celebrate Christmas differently, choose a plan that fits your people, budget, energy and local options—whether that means a quiet day at home, a meal with friends, a community project or a gathering on another date. These 40 ideas are possibilities, not a checklist of required traditions. Ask guests what they would enjoy, offer ways to take part, and make sharing, spending and speaking optional.

How to choose a celebration that works for you

Start with the people involved, not with a picture of what Christmas is supposed to look like. Traditions vary by place, faith, family and personal preference. The Australian Department of Home Affairs says its 2026 cultural and religious dates calendar is neither complete nor definitive, and observances may differ.

  • Pick a date: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Epiphany or another day may suit your group better.
  • Set the effort level: Decide whether you want an outing, a hosted meal, a small ritual or a restful day.
  • Make participation flexible: Guests can bring food, contribute a song, join an activity or simply be there. No one needs to explain why they pass.
  • Check access and logistics: Confirm opening hours, transport, weather, accessibility and return plans for the exact place and year.

For context, Pew Research Center’s 2013 U.S. survey found that nine in ten Americans said they celebrated Christmas; about half viewed it mostly as religious and one-third more as cultural. The survey also found 86% intended to gather with family and friends and 86% intended to buy gifts. These are historical U.S. figures, not current estimates or a measure of what people want today. (Pew Research Center, 2013)

Outside and away from home

1. Take a neighborhood lights walk

Go at sunrise or after dark, take photos of lights or winter nature, and keep the route short enough for everyone joining.

2. Visit a park, beach or trail

Make a nature hike or shoreline walk the main event. Check weather, daylight, path conditions and access before setting out.

3. Book a Christmas Day tour

If a local sightseeing tour is operating, it can make the day feel like a trip without requiring a full holiday at home. Verify the date, booking and transport directly. For example, Visit London’s 2026 guide says many venues close and London public transport does not operate on 25 December; that guidance is specific to London, not a universal schedule. (Visit London, 2026)

4. Visit a museum, garden or cinema on a nearby date

Choose an attraction when it is open rather than assuming Christmas Day hours will work. A date before or after the holiday may offer more choices.

5. Take a day trip

Build a car or train outing around a place you have wanted to see. Check holiday timetables, road conditions and how you will get home before leaving.

6. Have a meal or afternoon tea out

Find a restaurant or café that confirms it is open and accepting bookings. Ordinary hours may not apply on a holiday.

7. Make it an outdoor summer celebration

Where climate and safety allow, have a picnic, swim or play an outdoor game. Bring what the weather and location require, and choose an alternative if conditions change.

8. Be a tourist in your own town

Make a route of public art, landmarks and favorite shops. Check which stops are open, or choose places you can enjoy from outside.

Food and hosting

9. Host a flexible potluck

Invite guests to bring a dish, a drink or nothing at all. Ask about dietary needs early and avoid making one person responsible for the whole meal.

10. Make breakfast or brunch the gathering

Swap a formal dinner for a morning meal. It can be easier to schedule and leaves the rest of the day open.

11. Cook a favorite meal from another season

Make the food your group actually loves, whether that is a summer barbecue, a spring salad or a familiar weeknight favorite.

12. Hold a soup, dumpling or dessert night

Choose one easy theme and provide options that suit guests’ dietary needs. A shared menu can be more relaxed than a full traditional spread.

13. Learn one specific food tradition

Choose a well-sourced recipe or learn from someone who practices the tradition, and describe it specifically rather than treating one dish as representative of an entire culture.

14. Explore Norwegian Christmas Eve food

As one local example, the City of Oslo lists ribbe and pinnekjøtt among common Christmas Eve dinners and notes regional differences. Use that as a starting point for learning about particular customs, not as a claim that every Norwegian eats the same meal. (City of Oslo, Celebrating Christmas in Norway)

16. Take a cooking class together

Book a local class before the holiday and treat it as the celebration itself. Confirm the provider, schedule, accessibility and any dietary accommodations.

Community and generosity

17. Ask a nonprofit what help is needed

Contact a local organization before volunteering. Holiday needs, volunteer openings and operating hours vary, so do not assume a drop-in visit will be useful. The United Nations’ International Volunteer Day page offers broad context on volunteering, but local organizations are the right source for current opportunities. 24. Hold a low-key open house

Set a clear start and end time and let people drop in if they want company. A defined window makes the invitation easier to accept or decline.

30. Take a screen-free afternoon

Read, nap, pursue a hobby or enjoy quiet company. There is no need to replace every familiar activity with a new one.

31. Try a reverse-day schedule

Let dessert come first or ask the group to decide what happens next. A simple change in order can make a familiar day feel new.

32. Center the day on one favorite activity

Choose a low-effort pastime that people already enjoy, at home or outdoors, instead of building the day around a prescribed ritual.

Seasonal, cultural and reflective ideas

33. Light an Advent wreath

If it fits your beliefs, use a wreath with four candles and light one on each Sunday in Advent. The Vatican describes this as a practice unfolding over the Sundays before Christmas; the wreath is optional, not a requirement for a meaningful celebration. (Vatican, Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy)

34. Take part in a Posada activity with context

The Church of England describes a Posada activity in which figures of Mary and Joseph visit households from 16–24 December and identifies the tradition’s Mexican origin. If you host or join one, explain that context and use a resource from a community that practices it. (Church of England, Posada activity)

35. Attend a performance that suits the group

Look for a concert, carol service or seasonal performance people actually want to attend. Check the event’s content and setting so guests can choose what feels comfortable.

36. Mark the winter solstice

Take a walk, light a candle or make time for reflection. Present it as a personal seasonal activity, not a universal Christmas custom.

37. Learn about Kwanzaa on its own terms

If your group is marking Kwanzaa, use authoritative Kwanzaa resources and do not frame it as a substitute Christmas. The Official Kwanzaa Website says it “was not created to give people an alternative to their own religion or religious holiday,” and notes that it can be practiced alongside Christmas. (Official Kwanzaa Website, FAQ)

38. Celebrate on a different date

Gather on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, Epiphany or another date that suits the people involved. Customs and calendars differ; Oslo’s city guide, for example, says Norwegian celebrations center on 24 December. (Australian Department of Home Affairs, 2026 calendar; City of Oslo)

39. Invite people to share a memory—or not

Offer an optional moment for guests to share a tradition or memory, with a non-speaking alternative such as writing a note or simply listening.

40. Start a “choose one thing” tradition

Each year, let the group select one activity together. Keeping the choice open makes the tradition flexible as people’s interests and circumstances change.
