What the film is about

The story becomes a character study of masculinity and the myth of the American family. Harry Dean Stanton plays Travis; the cast also includes Nastassja Kinski, Dean Stockwell, Aurore Clément, and Hunter Carson. Sam Shepard wrote the film, Ry Cooder composed the music, and Robby Müller was the cinematographer.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the evidence show it is a streaming hit?
Not on the evidence available. The article that popularized the “hit” framing provides no viewership totals, platform ranking, named study, or measurement period. A Tubi listing shows that the film is in the service’s catalog; it does not show how many people watched it or whether viewing has surged.
The “41 years later” wording also does not match the documented release year when calculated in 2026. Criterion identifies Paris, Texas as a 1984 film, making it 42 years after that year in 2026. The available evidence does not establish a different 1985 release date.
