The examples below draw on Episcopal and Church of England service texts, Jewish tradition, one interfaith sample script, and secular wording ideas. Treat religious texts as options—not universal requirements—and confirm choices with your officiant or faith leader.
How to choose a wedding blessing, prayer, or reading
First decide what the words need to do: invite reflection, express a religious commitment, frame the vows, or offer a blessing for married life. Then check whether the text belongs in your tradition and whether your officiant approves it.
- Tone: Choose explicitly religious language, broadly spiritual wording, or a secular reading according to the couple’s beliefs.
- Community: A text used in one denomination or Jewish community may not be customary or accepted in another.
- Placement: A prayer may open a service; a reading may sit within the service or between other elements; a blessing may follow the vows or close the ceremony. The officiant can advise what fits the rite.
- Read-aloud fit: Consider length, pronunciation, and whether the reader can deliver the text comfortably.
- Approval: Share the exact wording with the officiant or faith leader before printing programs or assigning readers.
Wedding readings and prayers in Christian service texts
Christian rites vary. The Episcopal Church’s 1979 Book of Common Prayer marriage service offers scripture readings and prayers; the Church of England’s Common Worship marriage order includes a Bible reading and a marriage blessing. These are examples from specific liturgies, not a universal list for every Christian wedding.
Episcopal scripture and psalm options
The Episcopal text opens its Ministry of the Word with prayer and then provides for scripture readings. Its listed options include:

A prayer from the Episcopal marriage rite
One prayer in the rite reads: “O gracious and everliving God, you have created us male and female in your image: Look mercifully upon this man and this woman who come to you seeking your blessing, and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor and keep the promises and vows they make; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.”

A blessing sentence from the same rite
One sentence in the Episcopal service’s prayers asks: “Bless them in their work and in their companionship; in their sleeping and in their waking; in their joys and in their sorrows; in their life and in their death.” It is an excerpt from a larger rite, not a standalone blessing prescribed for all weddings.

Church of England reading placement
In the Common Worship marriage order, a Bible reading is part of the service and a blessing of the marriage is included. When two readings are used, a psalm or hymn may be placed between them. The officiant can confirm the available readings and the order appropriate to the service.
Jewish wedding blessings: the Sheva Brachot
Chabad describes the Sheva Brachot (“seven blessings”) as blessings recited over wine during the wedding ceremony, after the wedding feast, and at festive meals during the following seven days. The wording, language, and practice should be discussed with a rabbi; an adaptation should not be assumed acceptable across Jewish communities. See Chabad’s Chupah Texts for its presentation of the ceremony text.

Interfaith ceremony examples need community guidance
American Marriage Ministries publishes a Muslim-Jewish intercultural sample script that combines an opening prayer, a chuppah blessing, Quran and Genesis references, vows and rings, and a glass-breaking ritual. It is one authored example, not an authoritative guide to Muslim or Jewish practice. For an interfaith ceremony, invite the relevant faith leaders to review the wording and rituals and explain what is appropriate for the people and communities involved. The sample is available at American Marriage Ministries’ Muslim-Jewish intercultural ceremony script.

Opening prayers and reflections
- Ask God to bless the couple as they begin married life, using language approved by the officiant.
- Offer a prayer of gratitude for the couple’s relationship and for those gathered to witness their promises.
- Invite a moment of silence for reflection before the ceremony begins.
- Ask for wisdom, patience, and kindness in the couple’s life together.
- Recognize the family and friends who have supported the couple, if that suits the service and the couple’s wishes.
- Use the opening prayer in the Episcopal marriage rite as a denominational example, with the officiant’s guidance.
- Begin with a secular welcome that names the purpose of the gathering and the promises the couple will make.
Readings about love and commitment
- Choose Genesis 1:26–28 from the Episcopal rite’s list of reading options.
- Consider Genesis 2:4–9, 15–24, another option in that rite.
- Select Song of Solomon 2:10–13 for a reading drawn from the Episcopal list.
- Consider Song of Solomon 8:6–7, also listed in the Episcopal rite.
- Ask whether Tobit 8:5b–8 is suitable for the service and the couple’s tradition.
- Select a Gospel passage from the options in the Episcopal marriage service.
- Choose Psalm 67, 127, or 128, each identified as appropriate in that service.
- Use a Bible reading permitted by the Church of England Common Worship order.
- Ask the officiant whether a psalm or hymn belongs between two readings in the chosen service.
- Invite a family member or friend to read an approved passage aloud.
- Choose one short reading rather than several if the ceremony needs to stay focused.
- Use a reading that reflects the couple’s shared commitments without implying that it is an official religious text.
Prayers for the couple and their life together
- Use the Episcopal prayer beginning “O gracious and everliving God” as a tradition-specific option.
- Include the Episcopal prayer’s request for fidelity and steadfast love, if the officiant approves the full text.
- Ask for support through joyful and difficult seasons of married life.
- Pray for care and companionship in the couple’s daily work and rest.
- Offer a prayer for the couple’s families and chosen community, where appropriate.
- Have the officiant lead a prayer that reflects the couple’s own faith tradition.
- Use a quiet, non-denominational reflection rather than a spoken prayer if that better fits the gathering.
Blessings and shared rituals
- Include the Episcopal blessing sentence about work, companionship, waking, sleep, joy, sorrow, life, and death as part of the larger rite.
- Use the marriage blessing in the Church of England order when that service form is chosen.
- Ask a rabbi whether the Sheva Brachot belong in the ceremony and how they should be recited.
- Discuss whether wine is part of the couple’s Jewish wedding practice with the rabbi.
- For an interfaith service, ask each faith leader to review any blessing drawn from their tradition.
- Invite loved ones to offer a brief blessing only if the officiant and the relevant community consider it appropriate.
- Close with a blessing that matches the service’s tradition and the couple’s beliefs.
- Use a secular wish for mutual respect, care, and shared purpose if a religious blessing is not right for the couple.
- Leave a short pause after a reading or blessing so guests can reflect before the ceremony continues.
