The 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles returned to U.S. theaters for its 35th anniversary in August 2025, accompanied by an archival featurette called Turtles Unmasked. Fathom Entertainment later announced that the 1991 sequel was planned for a March 2026 theatrical return, but the available announcement does not confirm that those screenings ultimately took place.
What the original film’s anniversary celebration included
Fathom Entertainment, Saga Arts and Warner Bros. announced a theatrical engagement of the 1990 film with Turtles Unmasked, a featurette described as combining archival footage, extended scenes, home-recorded behind-the-scenes material and commentary by director Steve Barron. Fathom’s initial announcement named August 17 and 20, 2025; its later update said the engagement had opened August 15 and was extended in select U.S. theaters through August 28. Fathom’s original announcement and August 22 update document those dates.
The event is now historical: Fathom’s listing marks the original-film engagement “This is a Past Event.” The 1990 film opened March 30, 1990, and Fathom says it became the No. 1 film at the domestic box office for four consecutive weekends. The event listing identifies the film and its anniversary program.
What is known about the box-office result
In its August 22, 2025 announcement, Fathom reported $3.3 million in domestic U.S. opening-week box office for the anniversary engagement. The figure is the distributor’s report, not an independently audited result established here. Fathom also described the engagement as its highest-grossing classic/repertory film of 2025 as of that announcement. CEO Ray Nutt said: “With $3.3M in box office revenues for the opening week of its theatrical return engagement, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 35th Anniversary is currently the highest grossing 2025 classic/repertory film for Fathom Entertainment.” Fathom’s August 22 announcement is the source for both claims.

Did the 1991 sequel return to theaters?
On August 22, 2025, Fathom announced that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze was set for a theatrical return in March 2026. That is evidence of a plan, not confirmation that the run happened. The announcement was made by Fathom, and the sources cited here do not verify the sequel screenings’ completion. Check a current theater or distributor listing for any future or renewed screening information rather than relying on the old March 2026 announcement.
Why the first film’s effects are worth revisiting
The original film’s turtles were created through a practical-effects collaboration rather than a single performer inside each costume. The Museum of the Moving Image describes the Jim Henson Creature Shop’s turtle costumes and heads as using radio-controlled servo motors. Each turtle involved a suit performer, puppeteers operating the head, and a voice actor whose dialogue was later looped. The museum lists the film as a 1990 U.S. production directed by Steve Barron with a 93-minute runtime. The museum’s program notes provide the production context.

Anniversary print editions compared
Penguin Random House lists two IDW editions tied to the films’ comic adaptations. The sequel volume’s listed availability date was October 6, 2026—two days after the October 4, 2026 research timestamp—so verify the publisher or seller listing for current availability and stock.
