The exact title does not identify a publisher or name its 34 selections, and the available editorial lists do not match: Rotten Tomatoes’ guide contains 125 films, while TIME’s contains 25. Rather than inventing a definitive 34-film ranking, this guide explains the different qualities that can make a film feel sexy and points to five films that illustrate them.
Why “sexiest” is a matter of perspective
Sexiness is a response, not a consistently measured film quality. TIME’s editors put the problem plainly in “The 25 Sexiest Movies of All Time”: “Pulling together a wholly objective list of the sexiest movies ever made is impossible: One person’s erotic fever dream is bound to be another’s snoozefest, and vice-versa.” A list can still be useful, but its choices reflect the list-maker’s criteria as much as any universal consensus.
The difference is visible in two prominent guides: Rotten Tomatoes’ “125 Sexiest Movies Of All Time,” updated September 30, 2026, and TIME’s 25-film list. Neither establishes a canonical set of 34 films. Here, “sexy” means a film creates sensual appeal through one or more of the qualities below—not simply that it contains explicit scenes.
What can make a film feel sexy?
Chemistry and attraction
Some films generate heat through the pull between performers: glances, charged conversations, and choices that make attraction feel immediate. Rotten Tomatoes points to Body Heat as an example of chemistry, while Mr. and Mrs. Smith represents the appeal of a relationship played with star-powered energy. Chemistry can be the whole point of a scene even when little is shown.

Longing that builds over time
Attraction can also deepen through distance, circumstance, or a connection that cannot be acted on easily. Rotten Tomatoes cites Brokeback Mountain and Titanic as examples of passion built over time. In this mode, yearning and emotional investment—not just physical desire—create the film’s sensual charge.
Atmosphere and suggestion
Lighting, music, pacing, silence, and what remains unsaid can make a film feel intimate without showing sex. Rotten Tomatoes uses In the Mood for Love as an example of mood-driven appeal; TIME likewise emphasizes that a movie can be sexy without depicting sex. Suggestion may be the central attraction rather than a substitute for explicitness.

Forbidden or dangerous desire
When attraction crosses a boundary, suspense and risk can become part of its appeal. Rotten Tomatoes identifies Unfaithful and Secretary as films whose desire involves transgression. That tension is not the same as a simple celebration of an affair or power dynamic: the story’s context shapes how the attraction reads.
Sexual discovery and point of view
A film’s sensuality may come from watching someone discover what they want, or from whose perspective desire is presented. Rotten Tomatoes points to Gloria and Moonlight as examples involving awakening and self-discovery. This approach makes sexuality part of a person’s developing sense of self, rather than only a source of spectacle.

Explicitness and provocation
Some films use sexual scenes directly, but explicitness is only one dimension of sensual appeal. TIME’s article on sexually provocative films treats such content as potentially relevant to character and story, as well as something that can be controversial in production or reception. A provocative film may challenge boundaries without necessarily being romantic, tender, or sexy to every viewer.

| Film | What makes it a useful example | Its sensual mode |
|---|---|---|
| Body Heat (1981) | Rotten Tomatoes describes it as noir with modern sensuality, built around a central affair. | Chemistry, danger, and erotic tension. |
| In the Mood for Love (2000) | Rotten Tomatoes highlights the mood it evokes; TIME calls it unusually sexy despite its lack of sex. | Atmosphere, restraint, and suggestion. |
| Carol (2015) | Rotten Tomatoes includes it in its guide and describes attraction developing between two women. | Romantic attraction and emotional connection. |
| Moonlight (2016) | Rotten Tomatoes includes it as a story of self-discovery told across defining chapters of a life. | Sexual discovery and point of view. |
| Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) | Rotten Tomatoes includes it as a period romance centered on a young woman and the artist painting her portrait. | Slow-building attraction and attentive observation. |
These examples are illustrations, not a ranked top five or a claim that viewers will respond to them in the same way. They show why a useful discussion of “sexy movies” needs more than one yardstick: chemistry differs from longing; suggestion differs from explicitness; romance differs from dangerous desire; and self-discovery places the viewer in a different relationship to a character’s sexuality.
