This is a curated watchlist, not an objective ranking: each pick makes possession, demonic influence or exorcism central to its story. A few entries sit at the edge of the category, and are marked accordingly.
Classic exorcisms and investigations
1. The Exorcist (1973)
When her daughter appears possessed, a mother turns to a priest for help. The essential starting point for possession horror: a measured build, an intimate family crisis and an exorcism that becomes the film’s frightening center.
2. The Exorcist III (1990)
A police detective investigating a series of killings encounters clues that point toward an old, seemingly impossible case. It leans into mystery and unnerving atmosphere, making it a strong choice for viewers who want investigation alongside supernatural horror.
3. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
After a young woman dies following an exorcism, the priest who performed it faces a legal defense. Its courtroom structure gives the story a different emphasis from a conventional possession film: the drama turns on competing explanations as well as frightening events.

4. The Conjuring (2013)
The Perron family’s move to a Rhode Island farmhouse brings them into conflict with a dark presence, and paranormal investigators are called in. The film blends a haunted-house setup with a possession-driven threat and launched the Conjuring franchise. Its “based on a true story” framing is the film’s presentation, not proof that its supernatural account is established fact.
5. The Rite (2011)
A skeptical American seminarian travels to Rome and encounters the work of an experienced exorcist. This is a good fit for viewers who prefer a gradual, investigative approach to demonic horror over a nonstop succession of shocks.
6. The Last Exorcism (2010)
A minister who no longer believes in exorcisms agrees to let a documentary crew film what he expects will be his final case. The found-footage format puts the viewer close to the investigation and makes uncertainty part of the experience.
7. The Devil Inside (2012)
A woman travels to Rome to understand what happened to her mother, who is confined after a series of killings, and becomes involved with a group of exorcists. Its documentary-style presentation makes it a natural pick for viewers who like possession stories framed as an inquiry.
8. Deliver Us from Evil (2014)
A New York police officer investigating disturbing crimes is drawn into cases that appear to involve demonic forces. The police-procedural angle distinguishes it from stories centered entirely on a household or a single exorcism.
9. The Pope’s Exorcist (2023)
Father Gabriele Amorth investigates the possession of a boy and uncovers a larger mystery. It offers a brisk, contemporary take on the investigator-exorcist story. Sony describes it as a 2023 horror/thriller and lists it as available on digital, Blu-ray and DVD; current formats and listings can vary by region.
10. The Exorcism of God (2021)
A priest’s past encounter with an exorcism returns to haunt him when he faces another possession case. The story puts guilt and faith alongside the supernatural threat, making it a more personal variation on the exorcist-versus-demon setup.
11. The Seventh Day (2021)
An experienced exorcist takes a young priest on a training assignment that becomes more dangerous than expected. Its mentor-and-apprentice pairing gives the possession story a procedural shape.
12. The Vatican Tapes (2015)
After a young woman’s behavior becomes increasingly alarming, the Vatican becomes involved in assessing what may be happening to her. This is a straightforward modern possession thriller for viewers looking for institutional investigation and escalating supernatural peril.
Rank #2
Possession in houses, families and communities
13. Hereditary (2018)
After a family tragedy, grief and conflict intensify as a disturbing presence gathers around the household. This is the list’s slow-burn family nightmare: demonic influence emerges through an increasingly elaborate occult story rather than a simple exorcism plot.
14. The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018; released in some markets in 2019)
A morgue worker on the night shift begins to suspect that a cadaver is possessed. Its confined setting and overnight structure make it a compact, tense option. Sony’s title page calls it a 2019 title and lists digital, Blu-ray and DVD availability; release dates and listings can differ by market.
15. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)
A documentary crew filming a woman with Alzheimer’s begins to record events that suggest something more sinister is happening. The found-footage approach lets a family documentary gradually turn into a possession investigation.

A police officer investigates a wave of illness and violence in a remote village, where suspicion falls on a stranger and the supernatural. This Korean horror film builds its possession and exorcism elements into a wider mystery, rewarding viewers who like dread and uncertainty more than a quick explanation.
17. The Medium (2021)
A documentary crew follows a family in Thailand whose spiritual life takes a frightening turn. The film uses a mock-documentary style and a slow escalation, with possession embedded in family and local belief rather than treated as a conventional Hollywood exorcism.
18. Incantation (2022)
A mother attempts to protect her daughter from the consequences of a curse tied to a forbidden ritual. Its found-footage structure and occult imagery make it a strong choice for viewers who want a curse-driven story that moves into possession territory.
19. The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015)
Two students remain at a boarding school during a winter break while unsettling events unfold around them. This is a restrained, atmospheric pick: demonic influence matters to the story, but the film favors isolation and slow dread over explicit exorcism spectacle.

Two online performers stage exorcisms for an audience, until a broadcast becomes something much more dangerous. The contemporary livestream premise gives this possession film a satirical edge and a more energetic pace.
21. The Devil’s Doorway (2018)
Two priests investigate reports of a miracle at an Irish institution and encounter a disturbing presence. Presented as found footage, it pairs an institutional setting with an investigation into demonic activity.
22. The Offering (2022)
A man returns to his family’s funeral home, where an ancient presence connected to Jewish folklore threatens those around him. Its funeral-home setting and folkloric demonology give it a distinctive atmosphere compared with church-centered exorcism films.
23. When Evil Lurks (2023)
In rural Argentina, two brothers discover that a demonic infection is spreading and struggle to respond before it reaches their community. This is a bleak, high-intensity choice for viewers who want possession treated as a communal crisis rather than one person’s private ordeal.
Demons awakened, summoned or inherited
24. The Evil Dead (1981)
A group staying in a remote cabin plays a recording from an old book, awakening an evil force that takes hold of them. Sam Raimi’s cult horror classic is raw, kinetic and far less solemn than the exorcism dramas on this list.
25. Evil Dead (2013)
A group gathers at a remote cabin to help a friend in crisis, then unleashes a demonic force through a book. The remake keeps the series’ possession premise but pushes toward grim, visceral horror.
26. Evil Dead Rise (2023)
A family’s reunion in an apartment building is shattered when an ancient book unleashes a demonic presence. Moving the franchise’s familiar possession chaos from a cabin to an urban home gives this entry a distinct setting and close-quarters tension.
27. Annabelle: Creation (2017)
A dollmaker and his wife open their home to a nun and several girls years after a family tragedy. The supernatural threat gathers around the doll, giving this Conjuring-universe entry a haunted-house structure and a steady build toward possession horror.

A priest and a novice investigate a mysterious death at a Romanian abbey and confront a demonic presence. It is a gothic, religious-horror option for viewers who prefer an eerie setting and franchise mythology to a domestic possession drama.
29. The First Omen (2024)
A young American woman working at a church-run orphanage in Rome encounters a conspiracy surrounding the birth of a child. This is a boundary pick: it is principally an occult and demonic-influence story, not a conventional possession or exorcism film.
30. The Possession (2012)
A family’s lives are upended after a daughter acquires an antique box associated with a dybbuk, a spirit from Jewish folklore. This is also a boundary pick: it is a possession story, but its folkloric spirit is not the same thing as the Christian demonology found in many exorcism films.
