The best answer to “What songs should I avoid at my wedding?” depends on the track’s meaning, the moment you plan to play it, your guests and your own associations. Use the examples below as prompts for your personal do-not-play list—not as rules.
How to decide what belongs on your do-not-play list
Screen songs for four things: what the lyrics communicate, where in the wedding they would play, how the room is likely to respond, and what the song means to you personally. A track that works as a late-night dance-floor singalong may be wrong for a ceremony entrance or first dance. Listen to the full version you expect the DJ or band to use; a title or familiar chorus may not tell the whole story.
- Meaning and lyrics: Consider breakup, infidelity, possessiveness, death or loss, explicit sexual content, and any message that clashes with the tone you want.
- Wedding moment: Judge a first-dance choice differently from an open-floor request. Each has a different job.
- Room and taste: Novelty dances and familiar staples delight some guests and irritate others. “Overplayed” is a matter of taste, not an objective defect.
- Personal associations: A song connected to an ex, a painful memory or a loved one who has died may feel wrong for you. A track others would skip may still be right if it has a meaningful story in your relationship.
Wedding publications offer examples, not a definitive canon. For instance, WeddingWire’s do-not-play list, The Knot’s list of 26 songs and Brownsugar Music’s categorized list make different editorial choices.
32 songs to review before you put them on the playlist
These songs are examples drawn from wedding-editorial lists. The interpretations below are those publications’ readings, not a directive that every couple should exclude the tracks. Some titles appear in more than one category because suitability depends on context.

Breakup, grief or other somber associations
- “I Will Always Love You” — The Knot describes it as a breakup ballad in its first-dance guide; its emotional delivery can suggest parting rather than a beginning.
- “My Heart Will Go On” — WeddingWire includes it among songs couples may want to avoid, citing its association with loss.
- “Tears in Heaven” — WeddingWire also flags this song for its connection to grief.
- “Stay With Me” — The Knot lists it as a potentially mismatched first-dance choice because of its lyrical theme.
- “Skinny Love” — The Knot likewise identifies it as a first-dance option whose lyrics may not suit the occasion.
Possessive or unsettling themes
- “Every Breath You Take” — WeddingWire flags it, and The Knot notes that The Police have described it as concerning a possessive lover. Its sound can be mistaken for a straightforward love song.
- “You’re Beautiful” — Brownsugar Music includes it among songs to consider banning; check the full song and its context rather than relying on its romantic-sounding title.
- “One Way or Another” — Brownsugar Music includes this track in its examples of songs whose pursuit-oriented message may not fit a wedding’s intended tone.
Cheating, sexual content or a complicated message
- “Suspicious Minds” — WeddingWire includes it as an example of a song about mistrust.
- “Blurred Lines” — WeddingWire flags its controversial, overtly sexual content. If explicit lyrics are your concern, tell the vendor whether a clean edit is acceptable.
- “Before He Cheats” — Brownsugar Music lists it as a song to review for its infidelity-and-revenge theme.
- “It Wasn’t Me” — Brownsugar Music includes it as an example with a cheating-related storyline.
- “Love the Way You Lie” — Brownsugar Music flags its troubled relationship themes as a possible mismatch for a wedding celebration.
- “You Oughta Know” — Brownsugar Music includes it among breakup-themed songs couples may wish to leave out.
Novelty dances and frequently played staples
These are taste-based choices. A group dance can be a hit with one crowd and a hard pass for another. The Knot’s list includes examples couples may find polarizing, dated or overplayed:
- “The Chicken Dance”
- “The Macarena”
- “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
- “The Cha Cha Slide”
- “YMCA”
- “The Hokey Pokey”
- “Cotton Eye Joe”
- “Electric Slide”
- “Cupid Shuffle”
- “Celebration”
One DJ’s preference is not proof of a broad consensus: WeddingWire quotes Ken Gueco of Love Rockers in Southern California saying, “The one song I refuse to play and have never played in my 20 years in the industry is the ‘Chicken Dance.’” Treat that as his individual policy, not a reason every couple should ban it.

Other candidates to check against your plans
Brownsugar Music’s list includes these additional tracks as examples to review. Listen to the specific version and decide whether its message and energy suit your celebration:
- “Another One Bites the Dust”
- “Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead”
- “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”
- “I’m Too Sexy”
- “The Imperial March”
- “All My Ex’s Live in Texas”
- “Gold Digger”
- “Take This Job and Shove It”
Screen first-dance songs separately
A first dance calls attention to the song’s words and emotional tone in a way that a busy dance floor may not. The Knot’s first-dance guide specifically names “Stay With Me,” “I Will Always Love You,” “Skinny Love” and “Every Breath You Take” as songs that may be lyrically mismatched for the moment. That is an editorial judgment, not a prohibition: the song may hold a personal meaning for you, or an instrumental version may better fit the mood you want.

Turn your choices into clear instructions for the DJ or band
Once you have screened the songs, share a written brief with your music vendor and talk through anything that could be ambiguous. The Knot recommends reviewing a draft list with the DJ; MyWeddingSongs.com also advises written instructions and direct discussion with the entertainer. There is no established universal deadline or required number of tracks for sending the list, so agree on timing with your vendor.
- Mark exact exclusions. Include song titles and artists where possible, and say whether the restriction applies to every version or only a particular edit.
- Clarify sensitive content. State whether clean edits are acceptable, especially for songs with explicit lyrics.
- Explain the reason when it affects judgment. A note such as “not during the ceremony” or “avoid because of a family association” helps the vendor distinguish a moment-specific preference from a full ban.
- Add a must-play list. A few songs that capture the energy you want can give the DJ or band a positive direction, not just a list of restrictions.
- Review exceptions together. A song you love may still belong on the playlist even if a publication flags it. WeddingWire explicitly allows for personal taste and humor; let the vendor know when an apparent exception is intentional.
A shareable note or simple document is enough; a physical organizer is optional. The practical goal is that everyone working on the music can see the same instructions.
