Sandra Bullock’s The Net turns a familiar modern fear into a 1995 suspense thriller: what if someone could erase your identity through a computer? Released in the United States on July 28, 1995, the film marks 30 years in 2025—not 2026, when it is 31 years past its U.S. release.

What is The Net about?

Bullock stars as Angela Bennett, a freelance software analyst whose ordinary life unravels after a client asks her to debug a CD-ROM game. The client dies, and Bennett becomes the target of a conspiracy that wipes out her official identity. Sony’s synopsis describes a computer plot that leaves her fighting to prove who she is; the American Film Institute characterizes the film as a paranoid thriller about a programmer pursued by an enemy trying to ruin her life digitally. Sony Pictures’ film page and the AFI catalog entry provide the studio and archive descriptions.

The premise gives the title its unsettling hook: Bennett is not simply trying to stop a computer attack. She has to survive in a world where records that should establish her identity can be manipulated against her.

When did the film come out?

AFI lists the U.S. release date as July 28, 1995. Its 30th anniversary fell in 2025. The “30 years ago” framing fits that anniversary year; relative to October 2026, the release was 31 years ago. AFI’s catalog entry gives the release date.

Was it really the first evil internet movie?

“The first evil internet movie” is a memorable way to frame The Net, not a verified historical distinction. The available official descriptions call it a paranoid or suspense thriller and establish its story of digital identity destruction; they do not establish that it was the first film about a malign internet or computer conspiracy. It is safer to treat “first” as playful headline language than as a claim about film history.

What the premise does make clear is why the film’s threat remains easy to understand: Bennett’s attacker uses technology to undermine her standing in the offline world. The suspense comes from the gap between who she is and what the systems around her say she is.

Who stars in The Net?

Sony lists Sandra Bullock, Dennis Miller and Jeremy Northam among the film’s cast. Bullock plays Angela Bennett, the analyst at the center of the conspiracy. Sony’s page also reproduces a promotional review line attributed to Jeanne Wolf of Jeanne Wolf’s Hollywood, calling Bullock “sensational”; it is studio-presented promotional copy, not an independently verified interview statement. Sony Pictures’ page includes the cast, synopsis and quoted line.

How was it received?

Rotten Tomatoes showed a 44% Tomatometer score from 59 reviews in a page snapshot retrieved October 4, 2026. That is a changing review aggregate, not a box-office result or a fixed measure of the film’s reputation; the score and review count may change. Rotten Tomatoes’ page for The Net is the source for the snapshot.

Can you watch The Net on Blu-ray or DVD?

Sony’s official page lists both Blu-ray and DVD formats. It does not establish the technical features of a particular edition or current retailer stock, so check the edition and availability with the seller before buying. Choose Blu-ray or DVD according to the format you prefer and can play; Sony’s listing confirms that both formats are associated with the film. Sony Pictures’ film page lists the formats.
