Netflix’s 3 Body Problem trailer sets up a science-fiction mystery in which a decision made in 1960s China reverberates into the present, where scientists confront events that seem to defy the laws of nature. The eight-episode series premiered on March 21, 2024, and Netflix currently lists it to stream.
What is the 3 Body Problem trailer about?
Netflix describes the show as a “genre-bending mystery.” Its central thread connects a young woman’s consequential choice in 1960s China with unsettling developments decades later. Scientists and an unorthodox detective try to make sense of a crisis that appears to put the laws of nature in question.

That premise gives the trailer its central promise: a puzzle that grows from a specific human decision into a threat with consequences for humanity. Co-creator David Benioff described the story as “a story about humanity, and humanity’s struggle with a seemingly unsolvable mystery that snowballs into a full-on existential crisis.”
The official trailer page and Netflix’s accompanying explainer identify the series and its premise, but do not provide a written scene-by-scene account. A precise recap of individual shots or dialogue therefore cannot be established from those pages.

Who created the series?
Netflix names David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo as creators. Derek Tsang is also associated with the series as a director. The first season has eight episodes. Netflix’s official title page lists the show, while its series guide provides the episode count and production context.
Is 3 Body Problem based on a book?
Yes. The series adapts Cixin Liu’s science-fiction trilogy, beginning with his novel The Three-Body Problem. The show retains the trilogy’s central premise while reshaping elements for television, including chronology, characters, expansions and additions, and a present-day story located primarily in the UK.

Netflix says Liu gave the creators his blessing and encouraged changes needed for the adaptation. Alexander Woo described the goal as conveying “the experience — if not necessarily the exact details — of the novel onto the screen.” The book is a useful next read for viewers who want more of Liu’s original story and context, but it is not a prerequisite for watching.
Do you need to read the books before watching?
No. D.B. Weiss said, “reading the books is not a prerequisite for understanding or enjoying the show.” You can start with the series and decide afterward whether you want to read The Three-Body Problem and continue through the trilogy. Reading first is another option if you prefer encountering the source material before an adaptation; the series makes changes, so the two are not identical versions of the same sequence of events.

When did the series premiere, and how did it perform?
The series premiered on March 21, 2024. Netflix’s retrospective announcement says it spent three weeks at No. 1 and seven weeks in the Netflix Global Top 10, reaching that chart in 93 countries. Netflix also reported that The Three-Body Problem appeared on Amazon’s Most Sold Chart within days of the series debut and returned to The New York Times Best Seller list. These are figures Netflix reported about the 2024 launch period, not current audience or book rankings.
What song is in the trailer?
Netflix’s Tudum explainer identifies “This Bitter Earth,” performed by Dinah Washington, as the song featured in the trailer.
