There is no single, knowable picture of 2073. A 2023 foresight report from IE University’s Center for the Governance of Change (CGC) offers one evidence-based way to explore the question: it records what surveyed citizens expected and feared, alongside expert perspectives and a conditional climate projection. Its findings are scenarios and expectations—not facts about what will happen.
What does the 2073 report actually tell us?
IE University’s CGC published The Next 50: Trends for the Next 50 Years in 2023, looking roughly five decades ahead. The university says the work involved contributions from 15 experts and more than 8,000 citizens. Its report coverage describes a survey of 8,000 citizens across the 20 G20 countries about their beliefs, hopes and concerns on subjects including technology, economics, science, the environment and education.
These are reported expectations from respondents in G20 countries, not a census of humanity or a verified forecast. The published summaries available here do not establish enough about sampling, weighting or margins of error to assess how representative the results are. The figures show what respondents thought, not the probability that a particular outcome will occur.
The report’s research page poses the question, “How will the world be in 2073?” Its answers are best read as a record of present-day hopes and anxieties about the future. Read the IE University CGC research page and the report announcement published on 15 November 2023.

What did respondents expect from AI and healthcare?
AI could become central to society—but respondents imagined different roles
IE University reported that 80% of respondents expected AI to play a key role in society by 2073. The survey summary also describes divergent views about what that role could mean: nearly half anticipated seamless integration into everyday life, while 33% thought AI might dominate all aspects of human existence. These are distinct reported expectations, not competing probability estimates or proof that either scenario will happen.
Personalized genetic treatment was one healthcare expectation
In the university’s summary, 48% of respondents expected personalized genetic treatments in healthcare by 2073. That figure records a respondent expectation; it does not establish that such treatments will be widely available, affordable or routine by then.

What did the survey suggest about education?
IE University reported that 62% of respondents expected education to become more individualized by 2073. Separately, 47% selected increased AI use in the classroom as a future education scenario. The figures refer to different expectations and should not be read as probabilities or as evidence that classroom AI will necessarily produce more individualized learning.
What challenges did respondents see ahead?
The report summary identifies climate change and global economic inequality as major challenges respondents expected to affect civilization by 2073. That is a record of survey judgments, not a definitive ranking of future risks or a claim that these will be the only important challenges.

A conditional projection of extreme heat
IE University’s CGC research page says that 3 billion or more people could live in extreme heat by 2073, with around 30% of the world’s population living in regions where average temperatures are above 29°C. The word “could” matters: this is a projection, not an observation of 2073 or a universally established outcome. The cited page does not supply the projection’s assumptions or a confidence range in the material summarized here, so it should be treated as a high-impact scenario rather than a settled forecast.
For the university’s account of the report’s concerns, see its 14 November 2023 coverage.

How should other 2073 predictions be read?
Not every 2073 timeline rests on survey results or the same kind of evidence. Quantumrun Foresight labels its 2073 timeline as one of many possible futures. Its technology claims, including an electric-vehicle sales projection, are speculative scenario writing—not independent confirmation of IE University’s survey findings. When comparing future-facing claims, ask who was surveyed or modeled, what geography and assumptions are involved, and whether the statement is an expectation, a conditional projection, a speculative scenario or an observed fact.
Quantumrun’s 2073 technology timeline is an example of that explicitly speculative format. It should be read as a possible future, not as a report of what will happen.
