Cruise plays John Anderton, a leader in a police unit that uses predictions to stop murders before they happen; Farrell plays Danny Witwer, a Department of Justice agent sent to scrutinize the system.
What is Minority Report about?
In the film’s future, the Precrime unit acts on forecasts of murders that have not yet occurred. Anderton helps lead the unit, while Witwer investigates how it works. Their conflict puts the premise under pressure: if authorities treat a prediction as grounds to intervene, how reliable must that prediction be—and what happens when it is wrong?
That question gives the action its stakes. The film is not simply about stopping a crime in progress; it asks whether a system can justly punish or restrain someone for an act that remains in the future.
Who does Colin Farrell play?
Farrell plays Danny Witwer, the Department of Justice agent assigned to examine Precrime. Tom Cruise stars as John Anderton, the unit’s leader. The two actors share the film’s central clash over the authority and reliability of the predictive system.

Calling the film Farrell’s “breakthrough role” is an editorial characterization, not a conclusion established by the available sources. What is established is that he co-stars with Cruise in this major role as the agent investigating Precrime.
Is the film based on a book?
Minority Report is loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s 1956 novella of the same name. That relationship is a useful starting point for readers curious about the source, but the available evidence does not establish specific differences between the novella and the film.
