Why did the Globe wins seem to matter?

Vanity Fair described her victory as the larger change to the best-actress picture. The implication was increased visibility during a tight race—not proof that voters changed their ballots because of the Globes.

Why a Globe win could not settle the Oscar race
The Golden Globes and the Academy have different voting bodies. As Vanity Fair senior Hollywood correspondent Rebecca Ford put it, “The voting groups for the Golden Globes and the Oscars are very different.” A Globe result can influence public attention and the way pundits assess a race, but it is not an Oscar nomination or vote.
There is another important difference: the Globes split lead performances between drama and musical or comedy, while the Academy brought Moore and Torres together in one leading-actress category. Their wins therefore came in distinct Globe contests, not as a direct head-to-head result. Once the Oscar nominations were announced, both were among the finalists; the Academy later chose Madison.

What the 2025 results tell us—and what they do not
In retrospect, the Globes marked two meaningful moments in the season: Moore strengthened her perceived nomination position, and Torres brought fresh attention to her campaign. Both ultimately received Oscar nominations. But the result does not establish that either win caused a nomination, or that Globe victories reliably predict Oscar winners. The season’s lead-actress award went to a third contender.
Predictions made before the Oscars should also be kept separate from the final record. Vanity Fair’s final predictions characterized the lead-acting races as close and selected Moore and Adrien Brody; those were forecasts, not outcomes. Brody won both the Globe for motion-picture drama actor and the Academy Award for leading actor, while the actress award went to Madison.
