The 77th Primetime Emmy nominations, announced July 15, 2025, delivered record-setting totals for Severance and The Studio, a sharp second-season rise for Shrinking, and notable omissions including a complete shutout for Squid Game season two. “Snub” and “surprise” are critics’ descriptions of the Academy’s choices, not official Emmy designations.

What stood out in the 2025 Emmy nominations?

The Television Academy announced the nominees for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on July 15, 2025. Its chair, Cris Abrego, said, “More members voted in the competition than ever before — a record turnout.” That turnout is context for the size of the voting pool, not an explanation for any individual nomination or omission.

The Academy’s reported series totals put Severance at 27 nominations, the largest drama haul; The Penguin at 24, the highest total for a limited or anthology series; and The Studio at 23. The latter tied the comedy-category record set by The Bear in 2024. These are Television Academy figures for 2025. The Academy notes that its headline totals for comedy and drama series exclude producer nominations, so the figures should not be compared casually with counts using a different scope.

Surprises: unexpected breakthroughs and firsts

The Studio turned a new comedy into a record-level contender

The Academy’s 23-nomination total made The Studio the headline comedy breakout. The Associated Press pointed to how concentrated its guest-acting recognition was: five of the six nominees in comedy guest actor came from the series. That concentration makes the result striking not just for its scale, but for how much of the category it occupied.

Shrinking climbed from two nominations to seven

According to the Associated Press, Shrinking went from two nominations for its debut season to seven for its second. The nominations included comedy series and recognition for Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, and Michael Urie. Harrison Ford also received his first Emmy nomination.

Paradise, Sharon Horgan, and first-time nominees caught attention

A Los Angeles Times columnist described Paradise’s drama-series nomination as a surprise and singled out Sharon Horgan’s drama-actress nomination for Bad Sisters as notable. The columnist also marked Kristen Bell’s first Emmy nomination, for Nobody Wants This, and Uzo Aduba’s comedy-actress nomination for the one-season series The Residence as unexpected selections.

Black Mirror and Jake Gyllenhaal returned to the conversation

The same Los Angeles Times column identified Black Mirror’s return to limited-series recognition and Jake Gyllenhaal’s acting nomination for Presumed Innocent as unexpected choices. These are the columnist’s assessments of the field, rather than official Academy characterizations.

Owen Cooper set an age record

At 15, Owen Cooper became the youngest nominee in the history of the supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie category, according to the Television Academy’s 2025 announcement.

Snubs: prominent omissions from the official list

Squid Game season two received no nominations

The Associated Press reported that the second season of Squid Game received no 2025 Emmy nominations. The omission stands out against the show’s earlier awards recognition and the sequel’s substantial audience, but the shutout itself is the relevant 2025 result.

The Handmaid’s Tale had one nomination for its final season

After six seasons, The Handmaid’s Tale received just one nomination in 2025: guest actress, according to the Associated Press. AP characterized the result as a “chilly goodbye”; that is the outlet’s judgment, not an Academy label.

The Pitt drew criticism for the breadth of its supporting-cast recognition

A Los Angeles Times columnist called the omission of most of The Pitt’s supporting performers a snub, while noting that Katherine LaNasa was nominated. The criticism concerns the limited breadth of ensemble recognition, not a claim that the Academy overlooked the series altogether.

Other omissions selected by a Los Angeles Times columnist

The columnist also called attention to these absent names and titles:

  • Allison Janney for The Diplomat.
  • Selena Gomez and Steve Martin for Only Murders in the Building. The column noted that the comedy-actress field had been reduced from six nominees to five when discussing Gomez.
  • Natasha Lyonne for Poker Face and Kate Hudson for Running Point.
  • Bridget Everett for Somebody Somewhere and Megan Stalter for Hacks.
  • Meryl Streep for Only Murders in the Building.
  • The Rehearsal in comedy series.

This is the columnist’s selection of notable omissions, not a comprehensive list of every eligible performer or program that missed a nomination.

How to read “snub” and “surprise” claims

The Academy publishes the nominee list and category records; it does not designate entries as snubs or surprises. The labels belong to the journalists and critics interpreting that list. For comparisons, it helps to distinguish a show’s total haul from its category breadth, a returning season from a debut, and ensemble recognition from nominations for individual performers. Reported totals may also differ in scope, particularly where producer nominations are excluded from headline counts.

The nomination list establishes who was selected and who was not. It does not establish why voters made any particular choice, and the cited coverage does not provide direct voter explanations for these specific outcomes.

Where to check the official nominations
