These 20 singers who became actors are included for more than a cameo: each has a leading or recurring role, a substantial run of screen work, or a widely recognized performance. “Success” here describes different paths, not a single measurable ranking—Marie Claire aptly notes that “singing talent doesn’t always translate to acting talent.”
What counts as a successful jump from singing to acting?
A crossover can mean an Oscar-winning dramatic performance, a long-running television character, or a varied body of film work. It can also begin in a musical, a self-portrayal, or a role tied closely to a performer’s musical identity, then broaden into other characters and genres. The list is not ranked: the examples differ in the breadth and durability of their acting work.

20 singers who became actors
1. Jennifer Hudson
After competing on American Idol, Hudson made her film debut as Effie White in Dreamgirls (2006), a performance that won her the supporting actress Oscar. She later took the lead in Respect (2021), portraying Aretha Franklin. The pairing of a major first film role and later biographical lead makes her one of the clearest award-recognized transitions from singing to acting.
2. Cher
Cher’s screen career developed well beyond musical performance. She earned acclaim for dramatic roles in Silkwood, Mask, and Moonstruck; Moonstruck brought her an acting Oscar, while Mask earned Cannes acting recognition. Her career is a strong example of a recording star establishing credibility in character-driven drama.

3. Frank Sinatra
Sinatra moved between musicals and dramas over a sustained film career. His performance in From Here to Eternity won a supporting actor Oscar, and The Man with the Golden Arm brought a best actor nomination. Those roles helped define him as a film actor as well as a recording star.
4. Barbra Streisand
Streisand’s path ran from nightclub singing through Broadway and into film, making musical theatre an important bridge to acting. She won the best actress Oscar for Funny Girl and later demonstrated her range in dramatic work such as The Way We Were.
5. Will Smith
Smith first gained prominence as a rapper with DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, then starred in the television sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He moved on to leading film roles in Bad Boys, Independence Day, and Men in Black. His later acting recognition includes an Oscar for King Richard, illustrating a path from music and television comedy to major film leads and dramatic recognition.
6. Queen Latifah
After releasing the rap album All Hail the Queen, Queen Latifah built substantial film and television credits. Her roles include Chicago, Hairspray, and Girls Trip; she also leads the television series The Equalizer. Vogue identifies her as an Academy Award acting-category nominee, alongside a career that spans musicals, comedy, and television drama.

7. Ice Cube
A member of N.W.A., Ice Cube made his acting debut as Doughboy in Boyz n the Hood. He followed it with a durable film career encompassing the Friday and Barbershop films and studio comedies including 21 Jump Street. His work shows a transition from a serious early dramatic role into comedy and franchise filmmaking.
8. Ice-T
Ice-T moved from underground rap into film, with roles in New Jack City and Ricochet. His long-running portrayal of Odafin Tutuola on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is especially clear evidence of an enduring acting career: unlike a one-off guest appearance, it made him a recurring presence in television drama.
9. Mandy Moore
Moore released the pop single “Candy” and album So Real before taking film roles in The Princess Diaries and A Walk to Remember. She later earned television recognition in This Is Us and voiced Rapunzel in Tangled. Her credits show movement across teen films, family animation, and serialized drama.
10. Beyoncé
Beyoncé’s acting credits include Austin Powers in Goldmember, Dreamgirls, Cadillac Records, and Obsessed, as well as voice work in The Lion King. These roles amount to a notable crossover film career, although her primary public identity remains music rather than acting.
Rank #3
11. Madonna
Madonna’s screen roles include Desperately Seeking Susan, A League of Their Own, and Evita. Her performance in Evita won a Golden Globe acting award, a notable recognition distinct from her achievements as a recording artist.
12. Justin Timberlake
Timberlake’s screen work began before his years in *NSYNC, with child television appearances. His later film credits include Alpha Dog, The Social Network, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Friends with Benefits. Guest comedy work on Saturday Night Live adds another format to a career that has moved between drama, comedy, and ensemble films.
13. Lady Gaga
Gaga first appeared in film in Machete Kills and built television credits in American Horror Story before her major screen breakthrough in A Star Is Born. She won an Oscar for the film’s song “Shallow”; that was a music award, not an acting award. The distinction matters when describing her success: the performance brought broad screen recognition, while the Oscar recognized the song.
14. Ludacris (Chris Bridges)
Rapper Ludacris began acting under his given name, Chris Bridges, with early television work on Law & Order: SVU and a part in RocknRolla. He went on to recurring franchise work in the Fast & Furious films. His path shows how supporting and franchise roles can build a lasting screen presence without requiring an immediate lead role.

15. Awkwafina (Nora Lum)
Awkwafina made her name as a rapper before taking screen roles in Ocean’s Eight and Crazy Rich Asians. Her performance in The Farewell is an especially clear marker of a move beyond music-linked appearances into a character-led dramatic role.
16. Whitney Houston
Houston starred in The Bodyguard, Waiting to Exhale, and The Preacher’s Wife, and appeared in Cinderella. These leading film and television roles made her screen work notable, even though it remained secondary to her defining career as a singer.
17. Mary J. Blige
Blige’s acting performances in Mudbound and Respect provide a stronger basis for her inclusion than cameo appearances alone. Those dramatic roles demonstrate a screen career alongside her established musical one.
18. Harry Styles
Styles made his feature-film debut in Dunkirk, then appeared in My Policeman, Don’t Worry Darling, and Eternals. These released credits establish a continuing film presence across war drama, romantic drama, and superhero filmmaking; they do not, on their own, establish an acting career as extensive as the long-running television or award-winning examples on this list.

Wahlberg first became prominent as rapper Marky Mark before shifting to film. The Basketball Diaries and Boogie Nights were early turning points, followed by major films including The Departed and The Fighter. His career moved from music into a sustained run of prominent film roles.
20. Lenny Kravitz
After a successful recording career, Kravitz took supporting roles including Cinna in The Hunger Games films and Sean Hawkins in Shotgun Wedding. His screen work is less extensive than that of performers with long-running lead television roles, but repeated film parts make him more than a cameo-only crossover.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Different routes from music to screen
The examples show why “successfully made the jump” is not a single category. Hudson, Cher, Sinatra, Streisand, and Smith have especially legible milestones in major awards or leading roles. Ice-T and Queen Latifah demonstrate the staying power of long-running or repeated television work. Moore, Awkwafina, and Timberlake show range across film and television genres. Others, including Beyoncé, Houston, and Kravitz, have notable screen work while remaining principally known for music.
That variety is the useful comparison: a singer may cross over through musical theatre, a breakout film performance, recurring television, or a succession of supporting roles. The careers here do not support a numerical measure of how often singers succeed as actors, nor a universal ranking of who made the best transition.
