“Overlooked” here is an editorial description, not a measured ranking: these picks favor unusual premises, tonal risks and ideas that reward a present-day viewer, rather than films that appear on every familiar retrospective list. Their appeal is not that 1970s effects beat modern spectacle across the board. It is that some of these films put a strange or provocative idea—and the mood it creates—ahead of franchise scale.
The evidence available for this subject supports a handful of films, not a responsible twenty-title ranking. Rather than invent details for seventeen more entries, this guide focuses on three documented examples that show how widely the decade’s science fiction could range: an ecological drama, a children’s adventure and a pop musical oddity.

Why 1970s science fiction can feel different
Science fiction in the decade was not a single blockbuster style. BFI writer and film critic Kim Newman describes science-fiction B-pictures as films that could appear low on double or triple bills and circulate through drive-ins, grindhouses, cassette rental and streaming. That setting encouraged ingenuity, even when the results were imperfect; it is not evidence that every film in the genre was a flop or disappeared from view. BFI’s account of science-fiction B-pictures is a useful starting point for understanding that broader tradition.
That variety matters when comparing older films with current franchise productions. These picks offer different pleasures: speculative ideas, unexpected tones and inventive ways of working within a film’s scale. Whether they “outshine” a contemporary blockbuster is a matter of taste, not an objective finding.

Three 1970s sci-fi films that take unexpected routes
Silent Running (1972): ecological science fiction
Douglas Trumbull’s Silent Running is an ecological science-fiction film, a premise that makes it a natural choice for viewers interested in humanity’s relationship with the environment rather than another battle for the galaxy. The available catalog evidence establishes its ecological focus and the fact that its themes and technical aspects have been examined in a BFI Film Classics book by Mark Kermode. That is enough to identify it as a thematically rich case, but not to claim it is rare or overlooked in general.
For a deeper companion to the film, Bloomsbury lists Kermode’s Silent Running: BFI Film Classics, a paperback published on 31 October 2014 (ISBN 9781844578320). See the Bloomsbury book listing.
Rank #2
Kadoyng (1972): an alien adventure for children
BFI describes Kadoyng as a story about a friendly telepathic alien who arrives to help children stop a motorway from destroying their village. That setup makes it a useful counterpoint to the decade’s adult dystopias and space adventures: its conflict is local, its heroes are children, and its visitor is a helper rather than a threat. BFI includes the film in its list of great British science-fiction films.
Toomorrow (1970): a science-fiction musical curiosity
Directed by Val Guest and starring Olivia Newton-John, Toomorrow follows a London pop group abducted by aliens who want to save their race. BFI describes it as a rarely seen science-fiction musical—an appealing recommendation for anyone who would rather try an eccentric genre hybrid than another conventional space opera. Its musical premise is also the caveat: its particular blend of pop performance and alien adventure will not suit viewers looking for sober speculative drama.

According to the BFI Shop, the film was shelved after a week in cinemas because of a lawsuit and remained unavailable to the public for decades. The shop’s release is a newly scanned and restored edition. See the BFI Shop listing for Toomorrow. BFI Player also lists the film in its Cult Movies collection, but a catalog listing does not guarantee access in every territory. Check the BFI Player Cult Movies collection.
How to choose a starting point
- For ecological themes: Start with Silent Running; its ecological focus is well established, and Kermode’s BFI Film Classics book offers further context.
- For an unusual family-oriented premise: Try Kadoyng, the children’s story about a telepathic alien and a threatened village.
- For a genre gamble: Choose Toomorrow if a pop musical about alien abduction sounds more inviting than familiar space-opera conventions.
Check the viewing route before you buy or subscribe
Availability depends on the title, territory and format. The BFI Shop lists its Toomorrow Blu-ray as Region B, 94 minutes and one disc; confirm that the disc is compatible with your player and check the current listing before purchasing. A film appearing in BFI Player’s collection does not establish that it is streamable everywhere. The available sources do not verify current access for every country or a complete viewing route for all three films.
