From Portland to Broadway
1. She grew up in Portland, Maine
Kendrick was born and raised in Portland, Maine, according to her publisher’s author biography.
2. Her Broadway debut came at age 12
She made her Broadway debut in the 1998 revival of High Society, playing Dinah Lord. Simon & Schuster’s author page identifies her as 12 at the time.
3. The role brought a Tony nomination
Kendrick received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in High Society. It was an early professional distinction, not a win.

4. Camp is identified as her film debut
Biography.com’s profile, updated March 26, 2021, places Kendrick’s film debut in the 2003 musical comedy-drama Camp, directed by Todd Graff.
5. She appeared in the independent comedy Rocket Science
In 2007, Kendrick played Ginny Ryerson in Rocket Science, a coming-of-age comedy about a high-school student who joins the debate team.
6. Twilight came before her best-known leading roles
Kendrick played Jessica Stanley, a supporting character in the 2008 film Twilight. The role introduced her to a large franchise audience before her later prominence in films such as Pitch Perfect.

12. Beca Mitchell was a college freshman
In the 2012 musical comedy Pitch Perfect, Kendrick played Beca Mitchell, a college freshman who joins the Barden Bellas and becomes central to the group’s direction.

13. “Cups (When I’m Gone)” became part of the film’s identity
The song “Cups (When I’m Gone)” was featured in Pitch Perfect and became closely associated with Kendrick’s performance in the film. The available career sources establish that association, but do not specify how much of the recording or performance was live.
14. The song achieved chart and certification milestones
Biography.com says “Cups (When I’m Gone)” reached the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10. Separately, Simon & Schuster describes it as a triple-platinum hit in 2013. These are distinct claims from their respective sources, not evidence of an award won by Kendrick.
15. She returned for both sequels

16. She played Cinderella in Into the Woods
Kendrick portrayed Cinderella in Rob Marshall’s 2014 film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s musical Into the Woods.
17. She was surprised to receive more musical roles
In a 2014 TIME interview, Kendrick said she had been surprised to receive further musical parts after Pitch Perfect, including Into the Woods and The Last Five Years. That describes her perspective at the time, rather than a general rule about how musical casting works.
18. She voiced Poppy in the Trolls films
Kendrick voiced Poppy in the animated film Trolls (2016) and returned to the role in Trolls World Tour (2020), extending her work into animation.

Biography.com’s 2021 profile says Kendrick starred in and produced the 2020 television series Love Life. That profile is a dated overview, not a complete account of her later credits.
Her move behind the camera
20. Woman of the Hour was her directorial debut
In a Netflix Tudum interview feature published May 2, 2025, the streamer identifies the 2023 film Woman of the Hour as Kendrick’s directorial debut. The feature also discusses her reflections on pitching herself to direct and leading a film set. Netflix’s description notes that early experiences across different sets shaped her perception of the industry; that is the publication’s narration, not a direct quotation from Kendrick.
