Sansa Stark’s changing clothes and hairstyles chart her movement through the worlds of Game of Thrones—from a carefully dressed girl imagining life beyond the North to a figure more conscious of identity, danger, and power. The transformation is not a simple makeover or a straight line from victim to queen: her options are often constrained, and costume symbolism is interpretive. The 20-image timeline below follows the visual shifts across seasons one through seven, with readings attributed to costume designer Michele Clapton and the publications that reported on her work.

How to read Sansa’s changing look

Across the series, four details are especially useful to compare: color and fabric, silhouette, hair, and house symbols. They offer visual clues to changes in Sansa’s circumstances, but they do not provide a fixed code in which every garment or hairstyle has one definitive meaning. In a 2019 interview, Clapton said, “I continue to use costume design and details to express each character’s state of mind.” Vogue’s interview with Clapton provides context for the designer’s approach.

The sequence below is a gallery guide, not a claim that each look belongs to a particular episode. Episode and scene details should be included only when confirmed for the selected image; costume appearance alone is not enough to identify them.

Season one: Northern roots and an idealized future

Images 1–4: Pale blue, fine detail, and homespun beginnings

Early Sansa is visually set apart from the rougher surroundings by pale blue clothing and careful detailing. The look connects her to the North while also conveying refinement and aspiration: she is not simply dressed as a generic Stark, but as a girl with a particular idea of the life she hopes to have.

LovesTown 275PCS Medieval Dragon Set with Castle, Knights Warrior Figures
  • 275 PCS DRAGON CASTLE PLAYSET — Packed with a large 3D castle, fire dragon, siege weapons, walls, ladders, rocks, grass and dozens of knights in different colors. One dump from the bag turns the floor or table into a full fantasy battlefield, not just a couple of lonely figures
  • FIRE DRAGON AGAINST CASTLE SIEGE MISSIONS — The big, fearsome dragon and rolling catapults invite kids to plan daring attacks and brave defenses. One moment the knights are holding the gate, the next they’re rescuing prisoners or driving the dragon away – every setup becomes a new “epic quest” they direct themselves
  • TWO ARMIES, BIG IMAGINATIONS — Knights come in opposing colors so kids can easily pick teams, swap sides and act as both heroes and villains. As they negotiate alliances and battle plans with siblings or friends, they’re really practicing communication, turn-taking and creative storytelling together
  • STURDY PIECES FOR LITTLE HANDS — Knights stand on wide bases and the accessories are sized for small hands to grab and move. Tough plastic and smooth edges keep the set ready for endless rebuilds, so kids feel proud setting up their own detailed scenes instead of watching everything fall over
  • FANTASY GIFT WITH STORAGE BAG — Comes with a clear zip bag that makes cleanup quick and lets kids take their dragon world to grandparents, playdates or vacations. It’s a memorable gift for birthdays or Christmas that turns quiet afternoons into shared adventures parents will actually enjoy watching

Clapton described the first look as Stark in character but imperfectly finished: “When we first see Sansa [Sophie Turner], she wears things in a Stark way — very well, but they are slightly clumsy and the cloth is rather homespun.” The Los Angeles Times interview also contrasts Sansa’s beautiful embroidery with Arya’s rougher work. That difference makes their contrasting temperaments visible without making clothing the whole explanation for either sister.

Images 5–6: The girl who expects a storybook future

As Sansa’s world expands toward the South, her polished presentation sits alongside the hopes she brings with her. The costumes can suggest a desire to belong to a courtly world, but they should be read in the context of a young person’s expectations—not as proof that she understands the political risks ahead.

King’s Landing: Southern influence and observation

Images 7–10: A changing wardrobe in the capital

After arriving in King’s Landing, Sansa adopts Southern dress conventions. Her appearance becomes more shaped by the court around her, a contrast with the homespun textures and Northern associations of her earliest looks.

Images 11–13: Hair as a reported influence

TIME’s season-by-season gallery connects Sansa’s hairstyles to people she observes or learns from. That is a useful way to look at the changes, but it is an interpretation reported by the source, not a universal key that explains every braid or arrangement. Her hair, like her clothing, belongs to a period in which she is navigating a court whose rules and power are not hers to control.

For the first six seasons, TIME’s Sansa Stark costume gallery traces the visual progression and discusses the relationship between her styling and the people around her.

After King’s Landing: Darker styling, continued constraint

Images 14–16: A more guarded visual register

Once Sansa leaves the capital, her looks become darker. TIME reads this shift alongside her growing awareness of political danger and power, describing the later styling in terms of taking control. That reading is best treated as a visual interpretation, not a claim that her circumstances have suddenly become safe or fully under her command.

Back at Winterfell: Stark identity made visible

Images 17–18: The direwolf and a Northern claim

After Sansa returns to Winterfell, a Stark direwolf emblem makes her Northern identity explicit. Set against the Southern-influenced styling of her King’s Landing period, the symbol creates a clear visual contrast: the image now foregrounds the house she belongs to rather than the court she had to navigate.

The emblem is a visible design choice; what it means beyond that is a matter of interpretation. Read alongside her return to Winterfell, it can suggest a renewed connection to Stark identity without implying that the experiences between these looks have disappeared.

Season seven: Deliberate choices and bird imagery

Image 19: A more controlled silhouette

Season seven’s outfits are described as more deliberate and self-aware. Vogue reports that Clapton used costume to express characters’ states of mind and that Sansa’s season-seven clothes denoted new self-awareness. This is the designer’s stated reading of the choices, rather than an objective measure of how much control Sansa has gained.

Image 20: Motifs that invite, but do not settle, interpretation

Bird imagery offers another possible thread in Sansa’s costumes. In an interview about the season-seven designs, Clapton discussed bird imagery in connection with Sansa and entrapment. The Independent’s interview gives that context, but it does not make every bird-like detail mean the same thing. The motif works best as an invitation to consider the pressures around Sansa, not as a single definitive explanation of her wardrobe.

What the visual timeline shows—and what it cannot

From pale blue and careful embroidery to darker styling, a visible direwolf, and the more self-aware looks of season seven, Sansa’s clothes change with her surroundings and with the character Clapton describes through costume. The strongest comparisons are between phases: Northern texture and aspiration, Southern influence and observation, guarded styling after the capital, and a return to explicit Stark imagery. None of these visual shifts alone can summarize her agency or resolve the many forces shaping her story.
