For a first movie with a toddler, start with a short, preschool-oriented pick such as Tabby McTat (25 minutes), The Snowman (26 minutes) or Room on the Broom (27 minutes). A movie’s G rating or family label is not a guarantee that every young child will feel comfortable: age, attention span and sensitivity to peril or separation all matter. The choices below are grouped by likely readiness, with runtimes and Common Sense Media age guidance where available. Treat those ages as screening aids, not promises.
How to choose a movie for your toddler
“Toddler” covers a broad range of ages and temperaments. A two-year-old who enjoys a familiar story may respond very differently from a three-year-old who is unsettled by a loud chase or a character getting lost. Shorter films and specials can make a first shared viewing easier; you can also pause or stop if your child has had enough.
Common Sense Media’s First Movies for Kids list includes many titles rated 3+, which makes them useful starting points for older toddlers and preschoolers—not universal endorsements for every two-year-old. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org explains that Motion Picture Association ratings “give general guidelines to parents about the level of content they might find inappropriate for their children.” Read detailed content notes as well as the rating, especially if your child is sensitive to danger, separation, illness or frightening images.
Several entries below are television specials or short-form adaptations rather than conventional theatrical features. The list mixes those shorter choices with a few longer family films, and identifies titles whose recommended ages suggest waiting until a child is older or more ready for peril.

Short, preschool-oriented picks to try first

1. Tabby McTat — 25 minutes
A compact story about friendship, perseverance and change. At just 25 minutes, it is one of the briefest options here and may suit a child who is still building the attention span for a movie.
2. The Snowman — 26 minutes
This wordless, book-based holiday fable tells its story through pictures and music rather than dialogue. That makes it an appealing change of pace for families who enjoy a quieter, visually led short.
3. Room on the Broom — 27 minutes
A short adventure about a generous witch, adapted from a familiar picture book. The story’s kindness and brisk length make it a natural read-and-watch pairing for families who already know the book.
4. The Gruffalo — 40 minutes

A picture-book musical adaptation about a young fruit bat. Its mix of songs and familiar storybook sensibility may appeal to parents looking for something more musical than a typical animated feature.

A short superhero-style outing built around the familiar rescue pups, with perseverance and courage among its themes. It may be an easier entry point for children who already enjoy the series’ characters.

A Thomas story centered on friendship and cooperation. Its recognizable characters and manageable length may make it a comfortable choice for a child who already enjoys the trains.

17. Curious George: Royal Monkey — 86 minutes

The following films are popular family choices, but their age guidance or content notes point to older preschoolers or children who are comfortable with peril and stronger emotional themes. Common Sense Media’s Disney Pixar Movies list rates several famous G-rated Pixar films at age 5+. A G rating alone does not make them toddler-safe.
18. My Neighbor Totoro — older preschoolers, with an emotional caveat
Common Sense Media recommends this leisurely, imaginative story about two sisters for age 4+. It is often described as gentle, but their mother is hospitalized and the story touches on illness and loss. Those themes may be upsetting for a sensitive child, even without the kind of action peril found in some other films. See the Common Sense Media review and parents’ guide before choosing it.

19. A Bug’s Life — age 5+ guidance
Despite its G rating, Common Sense Media recommends this film for age 5+ and notes mild peril and scary bugs. Consider it for an older preschooler who enjoys adventurous stories, rather than as a default first movie for a toddler.
20. Finding Nemo — age 5+ guidance and very scary moments
Common Sense Media rates the film age 5+ and warns of very scary moments. The parent-child story may be moving for adults, but the peril and separation at its center can be a lot for a young viewer; review the detailed content notes before deciding.
Why some well-known family films are not first picks
Other popular choices are worth knowing about, but their age recommendations place them beyond the core toddler list. Common Sense Media lists Cars, Monsters, Inc. and Toy Story at age 5+; its notes flag peril and stereotypes for Cars and warn that Monsters, Inc. may scare sensitive children. The organization lists Frozen at age 5+ and PG, and Luca at age 6+ and PG. These can be family-viewing options for older children, but their ratings and reputations do not establish them as suitable for toddlers.
Disney’s preschool shows and family movies guide provides broader family-viewing context. It does not establish that a particular title is currently available on Disney+ in every country; streaming catalogs vary by region and change over time.
