TIME’s ranking of the first 20 disaster movies on Letterboxd starts with Armageddon at No. 1 and Titanic at No. 2. One important clarification: this is TIME’s editorial list, hosted on Letterboxd—not a ranking calculated from Letterboxd members’ ratings. TIME’s original list has 25 films; this article covers its first 20, in the same order.
How TIME defines a disaster movie
TIME writer James Grebey sets two boundaries for the list: a film must emphasize widespread, special-effects-driven destruction, and its disaster must result from nature or accident rather than deliberate malice. That is TIME’s editorial definition, not a universal rule for the genre. It excludes, for example, alien invasion in Independence Day and the terrorist takeover in Die Hard. The focus is on people trying to survive, prevent or limit a catastrophe—not defeat an intentional attacker. Read TIME’s original ranking and explanation.

The 20 films, in TIME’s ranked order
-
Armageddon (1998)
TIME puts Michael Bay’s asteroid-avoidance blockbuster first, embracing its outsized effects and unabashedly cheesy excess. It is the list’s most exuberant choice: a high-stakes, spectacle-first adventure rather than a restrained account of a plausible emergency.
-
Titanic (1997)
James Cameron’s romance and historical shipwreck drama takes second place. Its combination of intimate relationships and large-scale disaster makes it a different kind of spectacle from the cosmic threat at No. 1.

SaleDisaster Movie [Blu-ray]- Over the course of one evening, an unsuspecting group of twenty-somethings find themselves bombarded by a series of natural disasters and catastrophic events.
-
2012 (2009)
Roland Emmerich’s apocalyptic action film turns a global catastrophe into a succession of enormous set pieces. It represents the ranking’s most expansive, speculative scale.
-
Twister (1996)
The tornado thriller pairs storm-chasing action with a comparatively grounded setting. TIME singles out the airborne cow as a memorable touch that keeps the spectacle playful.
-
The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
After a wave capsizes an ocean liner, survivors must make their way through the overturned ship. The contained setting makes the danger immediate and gives the film an ensemble-survival focus.
-
Contagion (2011)
Steven Soderbergh’s pandemic drama follows an infectious disease as it spreads through communities and institutions. Its catastrophe unfolds through public-health consequences and human decisions, rather than a single spectacular impact.

Rank #2
-
The Core (2003)
This science-fiction adventure imagines a crisis beneath the planet’s surface and a mission to address it. It leans into a speculative premise and big-screen disaster mechanics.
-
A Night to Remember (1958)
This earlier dramatization of the Titanic disaster is valued for its fidelity to the historical event. Compared with later entries built around fantastical threats, it offers a more documentary-minded approach to a real maritime catastrophe.
-
Pandora (2016)
The South Korean thriller centers on a nuclear power plant crisis after an earthquake. Its industrial emergency makes it one of the ranking’s examples of disaster arising from accident and infrastructure failure.

San Andreas (2015)
An earthquake devastates California in this effects-driven action film. Its focus on a family navigating a collapsing landscape places personal rescue inside a large-scale disaster.
-
Deepwater Horizon (2016)
Based on the 2010 offshore drilling-rig disaster, the film focuses on an industrial accident and the people caught in it. Its source in a real event distinguishes it from the list’s more speculative calamities.

Deep Impact (1998)
A comet threatens Earth in this drama that balances the planetary stakes with the reactions of individuals and communities. It offers a more solemn counterpoint to Armageddon, released the same year with a similar broad threat.
-
The Burning Sea (2021)
This Norwegian thriller builds its catastrophe around an offshore oil-field accident. Like Deepwater Horizon, it draws on the risks of industrial activity at sea, though it tells a fictional story.
-
Poseidon (2006)
This later take on the capsized-liner premise of The Poseidon Adventure emphasizes contemporary action and survival spectacle. The two entries offer a direct comparison in how different eras stage the same kind of maritime emergency.
Rank #4
-
The Towering Inferno (1974)
A fire in a high-rise drives this ensemble disaster film. TIME notes that it was the highest-grossing film of 1974, without giving a gross figure in its article.

Sharknado (2013)
This intentionally outlandish storm-and-shark mash-up treats disaster as knowing camp. It is the ranking’s clearest option for viewers who want absurdity more than realism.
-
Volcano (1997)
A volcanic eruption in Los Angeles closes TIME’s top 20 with an urban disaster premise. It shares its decade with Twister and Deep Impact, but trades tornadoes and a comet for a threat erupting beneath a city.
How to choose what to watch
TIME supplies an order, not a measured scorecard. These comparisons are practical ways to choose among the films, not ratings assigned by the source.
- For spectacular, deliberately exaggerated action: start with Armageddon, 2012 or San Andreas.
- For a historical or real-event foundation: try Titanic, A Night to Remember or Deepwater Horizon.
- For an intimate survival story inside a huge emergency: consider Greenland, The Poseidon Adventure or Poseidon.
- For catastrophe tied to public health or infrastructure: choose Contagion, Pandora or The Burning Sea.
- For a lighter, knowingly playful tone: Twister offers a grounded adventure with comic moments; Sharknado goes all-in on camp.
What the Letterboxd attribution means
Letterboxd’s page presents TIME’s list on the platform, while TIME’s article supplies the ranking and its reasoning. So “according to Letterboxd” here means the list is hosted there; it does not mean the 20 films were selected or ordered by audience ratings. The complete TIME list continues beyond this article’s first 20: No. 21 is Dante’s Peak (1997), followed by Pompeii (2014), The Wave (2015), Airplane! (1980) and Don’t Look Up (2021).
