This guide focuses on films substantially about teenagers or high-school life, with a few adjacent coming-of-age stories where the genre’s conventions are central. The selection weighs historical influence, comic style, period detail, and how gender and consent jokes land today; it is a curated guide, not an objective ranking.

How to read this list
The films below are grouped roughly by their place in the genre’s history, not ordered by a measurable score. Some are included because they helped define a cycle; others because they recast it around friendship or parody. Their reputation as influential comedies does not mean every joke has aged well. In particular, sexual humor and portrayals of women, consent, and harassment deserve a more critical viewing than they often received at release.
Ratings for the full selection have not been individually confirmed here. Check each title’s current rating and content descriptors with the MPA or the relevant official rating authority; do not infer a rating from a film’s reputation or from the category label used in a retrospective list.

Foundations of the 1980s teen comedy
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
A defining early entry in the 1980s wave of sex-focused teen movies, Fast Times makes room for awkward desire and disappointment as well as jokes. Its attention to ordinary school and dating life gives it more texture than a simple sequence of sexual mishaps. The British Film Institute places it in the early wave of the decade’s sex-focused teen films, while Esquire contrasts its treatment of romance with the more immature approach of Porky’s. BFI’s teen-film selection; Esquire’s teen-sex-comedy list.
Porky’s (1982)
Porky’s helped establish the 1980s teen-sex-comedy template: adolescent schemes, sexual humiliation, and an unruly group of boys. It matters as a genre landmark, but its treatment of women is a significant part of its legacy, not a detail to wave away. Esquire itself notes that the film’s approach to women is unflattering. It is best approached as a revealing artifact of the genre’s values as much as a comedy whose influence can be recognized without endorsing its outlook. Esquire’s teen-sex-comedy list.
Losin’ It (1983)
This early-1980s entry belongs to the cycle of sexual-misadventure comedies in which young people set out to prove their maturity and discover how little control they have over events. It is a useful companion to the better-known films of the period for readers tracing the genre’s recurring underdog and sexual-initiation patterns. Treat its historical placement as the reason to seek it out; not every film from the cycle offers the same balance of character, setting, or comedy. Esquire includes it among the era’s teen-sex comedies. Esquire’s teen-sex-comedy list.
Rank #2
Risky Business (1983)
Risky Business sits at the edge of the high-school-comedy category, using youthful rebellion and a sexual-misadventure premise rather than a school-centered ensemble. It belongs in a broad guide to the genre because it shows how the period’s comedies could turn adolescent risk-taking into a story about status, money, and independence. Its setting is adjacent to the high-school template, so it is a looser fit than films built squarely around school life. Esquire includes it among its teen-sex-comedy selections. Esquire’s teen-sex-comedy list.

The underdog fantasy is another durable genre strand: outsiders try to overturn the social order and win recognition. Revenge of the Nerds is frequently discussed as part of that 1980s pattern, but its place in a retrospective is not an endorsement of how it handles sexual boundaries. Viewers should account for the gap between the film’s intended comic triumph and contemporary expectations about consent. Esquire’s list provides a period context for the film among teen-sex comedies. Esquire’s teen-sex-comedy list.
Teenage life as a time and place
Dazed and Confused (1993)
Rather than build around one escalating sex plot, Dazed and Confused follows teenagers through a night of cruising and social rituals in 1970s Texas. Its period-specific rock soundtrack and local high-school atmosphere are central to the experience, making the film as much a portrait of a particular time and place as a string of comic episodes. The BFI highlights that setting, its night-out structure, and its music. BFI’s teen-film selection.
Rank #3
American Pie (1999)
American Pie brought the teen-sex-comedy formula into a late-1990s high-school setting, centering a group of friends on sexual inexperience and the pressure to seem experienced. Its broad, often crude premise made it a prominent bridge between the 1980s cycle and later raunchy studio comedies. A modern viewing can recognize its influence while asking whether its jokes treat intimacy as mutual or merely as a goal to be achieved.
Election (1999)
For a more satirical take on school life, Election turns student politics into a study of ambition, self-deception, and adult hypocrisy. Its comedy is less about sexual escapades than about the social machinery around teenagers—and the adults who claim to guide them. That shift in comic target makes it a useful counterpoint to the genre’s more purely raunch-driven entries.

Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)
Set around a high-school graduation party, Can’t Hardly Wait uses an ensemble of classmates to explore crushes, status, and the stories teenagers tell themselves about one important night. Its party structure gives it the loose, overlapping energy of a teen social world, while the characters’ romantic expectations supply the comedy. It is a good pick for viewers who want a school-era ensemble rather than a single misadventure plot.

Parody, friendship, and a changing genre
Not Another Teen Movie (2001)
This film makes teen-movie conventions its subject, parodying familiar character types and plot devices rather than simply repeating them. Sony labels it Rated R and describes it as a comedy; the studio page also says it is available on DVD and digital, though availability can change. Its value in this lineup is as a bridge between teen-film formulas and their send-up. Sony Pictures’ film page.
Superbad (2007)
Superbad pairs an outrageous party-night premise with a friendship story about the anxiety of leaving high school for college. That emotional center helps explain why it remains a modern teen-comedy landmark even for viewers less interested in the raunch. Its humor also reflects attitudes that have been reassessed: TIME points to criticism of homophobic jokes, casual sexism, and sexual harassment. A fair contemporary reading can hold both things at once—the film’s recognizable affection for friendship and the discomfort of some of its jokes. Esquire’s teen-sex-comedy list; TIME on Superbad.
Booksmart (2019)
Booksmart updates the graduation-night format around two close friends who realize they have spent much of high school focused on achievement. Its comic engine is not simply sexual conquest; it is the collision between self-image and the unpredictable social life they thought they had missed. The friendship at its center gives the familiar party-night premise a different emotional emphasis.
Bottoms (2023)
Bottoms pushes teen-comedy exaggeration into deliberate absurdity, using high-school status, desire, and an implausible scheme as targets for satire. Its heightened tone makes it a useful contemporary contrast with the more naturalistic or period-specific films in this guide. It is less a return to the old teen-sex-comedy formula than a knowingly unruly response to conventions that formula left behind.
Choosing what to watch
- For a foundational 1980s perspective: start with Fast Times at Ridgemont High, then compare its more complicated take on teen romance with Porky’s.
- For atmosphere and period detail: choose Dazed and Confused, whose night-out structure and music help define its setting.
- For a friendship-centered modern classic: try Superbad, keeping its tonal mix of affection and dated jokes in mind.
- For parody: watch Not Another Teen Movie as a send-up of the conventions that earlier films established.
- For a contemporary change of tone: consider Booksmart or Bottoms, which use the high-school setting for different kinds of friendship and social satire.
