For witty banter, yearning melodrama, wartime sacrifice, and bittersweet love, these 20 Hollywood studio-era romances offer very different pleasures. The list is a curated selection, not an objective ranking: “Golden Age” has no single agreed boundary, so this guide uses a practical range of the 1930s through the 1950s. Films are arranged by first release year, with Casablanca dated to its 1942 New York opening; its national release followed in 1943.

How to choose a Golden Age romance

Classic romance is not one mood. Some films make courtship a battle of wits; others place love inside a wartime crisis, a musical, or a story of restraint and loss. The entries below identify the romance mode and general emotional tone so you can choose by the kind of evening you want, not just by decade or star.

The American Film Institute’s guide describes its selection as “a shortlist of the best films exploring the complexities of love.” Its selections and rankings are useful starting points, not a universal measure of romantic quality. The films here are presented as recommendations rather than a definitive canon.

20 classic romance movies to watch

1. It Happened One Night (1934)

Stars: Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable. Mode and mood: Screwball comedy; playful and quick-witted. A runaway heiress and a reporter find themselves thrown together on the road, where their mutual irritation gradually changes. It is an ideal starting point for viewers who like romantic sparring and comic reversals. AFI calls it a quintessential screwball comedy and notes that it became the first film to win the five major Academy Award categories. American Film Institute.

2. The Awful Truth (1937)

Stars: Irene Dunne and Cary Grant. Mode and mood: Screwball comedy; mischievous and urbane. A couple whose marriage is coming apart keeps disrupting each other’s attempts to move on. Its pleasure lies in the performances’ timing and the question of whether teasing can conceal lasting affection.

3. The Philadelphia Story (1940)

Stars: Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart. Mode and mood: Romantic comedy; sharp and sophisticated. A wealthy woman’s impending wedding is complicated by the return of her former husband and the arrival of a reporter. The multiple romantic possibilities make it especially satisfying for viewers who enjoy ensemble chemistry and sparkling dialogue.

4. The Shop Around the Corner (1940)

Stars: Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart. Mode and mood: Workplace romance; gently comic and tender. Two coworkers who clash in person are unknowingly drawn to one another through anonymous letters. The contrast between their prickly daily encounters and private idealism gives this romance its distinctive warmth.

5. Remember the Night (1940)

Stars: Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray. Mode and mood: Holiday romance; affectionate with a bittersweet edge. 6. The Clock (1945)

Stars: Judy Garland and Robert Walker. Mode and mood: Wartime romance; earnest and time-pressured. A serviceman on leave and a young woman meet in New York and have only a brief window together. The short span gives the romance an immediacy that distinguishes it from stories built around long courtships.

7. Brief Encounter (1945)

Stars: Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. Mode and mood: Restrained romantic drama; quiet and aching. Two married strangers meet by chance and develop a bond that challenges their existing lives. It is a British film rather than a Hollywood studio production, so it sits just outside the article’s geographic scope; it is included as a closely related classic for readers drawn to understatement and longing.

8. Notorious (1946)

Stars: Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant. Mode and mood: Suspenseful romance; tense and emotionally charged. A woman recruited for an espionage mission and the agent who recruits her are caught between professional duty and personal feeling. The danger is integral to the relationship, making this a strong choice for viewers who want romance intertwined with suspense.

9. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)

Stars: Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. Mode and mood: Supernatural romance; wistful and atmospheric. A widow moves into a seaside house inhabited by the ghost of its former owner. 10. Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948)

Stars: Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan. Mode and mood: Romantic melodrama; melancholy and intimate. A pianist receives a letter from a woman whose devotion has shaped her life. This is a yearning, emotionally intense choice rather than a light romance; its appeal lies in the gap between private feeling and what the other person understands.

11. Adam’s Rib (1949)

Stars: Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Mode and mood: Romantic comedy; spirited and argumentative. Married lawyers take opposite sides in a courtroom case, carrying their professional rivalry into their relationship. The film is a good pick for viewers who enjoy a romance where equality and disagreement are part of the fun.

12. All About Eve (1950)

Stars: Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, and George Sanders. Mode and mood: Show-business drama with romantic threads; acerbic and unsentimental. A young admirer works her way into the orbit of a celebrated stage actress, while the film’s relationships expose ambition and insecurity. Romance is not its central engine, so choose it for its sharp character drama as much as for its love story.

13. Roman Holiday (1953)

Stars: Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. Mode and mood: Romantic comedy; breezy, charming, and touched with wistfulness. A princess escapes her official duties and explores Rome with an American reporter. The film’s romantic pairing and city setting make it an inviting choice when you want lightness without a purely carefree tone. AFI’s May 2025 page reports that it ranked fourth on the institute’s greatest-love-stories list. American Film Institute.

Stars: Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, and William Holden. Mode and mood: Romantic comedy; elegant and light. It works well for viewers looking for star-driven charm and a classic love-triangle setup.

15. All That Heaven Allows (1955)

Stars: Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson. Mode and mood: Romantic melodrama; sincere and socially constrained. A widow falls for a younger gardener, but the expectations of her community and family weigh heavily on their relationship. Choose it for an emotionally direct love story about private desire under public scrutiny.

16. Love in the Afternoon (1957)

Stars: Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper. Mode and mood: Romantic comedy; playful, flirtatious, and polished. A young cellist becomes intrigued by an older American playboy in Paris. Its appeal is the contrast between her curiosity and his practiced charm.

17. An Affair to Remember (1957)

19. Some Came Running (1958)

Stars: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Shirley MacLaine. Mode and mood: Romantic drama; restless and bittersweet. A writer returns to his hometown and becomes entangled in relationships shaped by loneliness, reputation, and mismatched hopes. This is a more ensemble-driven, emotionally rough-edged option than a conventional courtship comedy.

20. Imitation of Life (1959)

Stars: Lana Turner, John Gavin, and Sandra Dee. Mode and mood: Melodrama; emotionally expansive and bittersweet. The lives of a struggling actress and a Black woman who becomes her friend and business partner unfold alongside their daughters’ changing ambitions and relationships. Romance is one strand of a broader family story, making this a pick for viewers prepared for a large-scale melodrama rather than a romance centered on a single couple.
