The 20 performers below became especially prominent through SNL or used the show as a springboard, though several had already built careers before joining the cast.
What “got their start” means for SNL alumni
Saturday Night Live premiered on October 11, 1975, with George Carlin as host and Billy Preston and Janis Ian as musical guests, according to the Associated Press. Since then, the show has offered performers a nationally visible platform, but it did not provide every future star with their first work in entertainment. The Television Academy describes SNL as a launch pad that helped turn cast members into household names.
The list focuses on people who were cast members or served as writers, rather than hosts and sketch guests. It is representative, not a ranking: the Academy’s anniversary feature names some alumni as examples, while its biographies establish career context for others. For several figures, the reliable distinction is between a pre-existing career and a major increase in visibility on the show.

There was no single SNL career path. Some performers, such as Bill Murray, gained broad exposure on the show before moving into starring films. Others arrived with substantial experience: Chris Rock already had stand-up and supporting film work, while Tina Fey’s influence extended behind the camera through writing and head-writing responsibilities. A cast member’s path might run through recurring characters, impressions, live news satire, writing, or a breakout sketch that audiences shared beyond the broadcast.
The Television Academy reported 95 Emmy trophies for SNL in its February 2025 anniversary feature, a measure of the program’s institutional recognition rather than a count of careers it launched. Peacock’s cast page listed 172 official cast members as of 2026; that total can change as the roster grows. Neither figure establishes how many alumni achieved a career breakthrough because of the show.
Why SNL remains a career platform
The format puts performers, writers, and the production team under an unusually visible weekly deadline. Characters can recur, impressions can respond to current events, and a sketch that connects with viewers can quickly become part of the public conversation. That exposure can help an alum move into film, television, live performance, or writing, but it does not guarantee a particular outcome.
As creator Lorne Michaels put it in the Television Academy’s February 19, 2025 anniversary feature: “But we still take it one week at a time. The great part of doing the show is that whatever happened last week, you’re on to this week.” The line describes the show’s ongoing rhythm—and why its alumni careers are better understood as varied paths than as a single formula.
