This subjective ranking weighs world-building and internal logic, character and story development, visual direction, tone, and how much time each title asks of you. It spans fantasy series, films, dark fantasy, magical adventure, and isekai; the order is an editorial guide, not an official or universal verdict.
How this fantasy anime ranking works
“Best” varies with taste and with how a ranking selects and scores its titles. Anime Trending’s 2025 Anime of the Year results, for example, are an audience award across anime generally, not a fantasy-only ranking: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End placed first with 10,280 votes, or 11.83% of the category’s 86,903 total votes (Anime Trending’s 11th Anime Trending Awards results). A different site, Otakiva, presents a fantasy list based on score and global popularity; its page displayed 99 titles when accessed on October 4, 2026, with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood first and Frieren tenth (Otakiva’s fantasy ranking). Those rankings answer different questions. The placements below instead balance setting, storytelling, craft, mood, and commitment.
20 best fantasy anime, ranked
1. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Frieren begins after the familiar heroic quest is over. Its thousand-year-old mage protagonist travels with new companions, gradually confronting what a human life means to someone who experiences time so differently. That post-adventure premise gives the series room for quiet character work as well as spell-filled journeys, and its measured pace is a strength for viewers who like reflection alongside adventure. The official anime introduction describes the story as taking place after the hero party defeats the demon king, following Frieren on a new journey; it also reports cumulative circulation above 35 million copies for the manga’s released volumes (official anime introduction). The same official page says seasons 1 and 2 have aired and lists season 3, adapting the Golden Land arc, for October 2027; that is the schedule stated on the page accessed October 4, 2026, not a guarantee that the date will remain unchanged. If you want to continue beyond the anime, the franchise site links its official books information; check the listing for the edition and availability you want.
2. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
This is a strong pick for viewers who want a complete-feeling epic built around rules and consequences. Alchemy shapes the world’s technology, politics, and dangers, while the brothers’ search for a way to repair what they have lost keeps the personal stakes in view. Its broad cast and interlocking conflicts reward a sustained series commitment.
#1 Best Overall
- Continuing the storyline based on the hit Playstation game Final Fantasy VII, two years have passed, a mysterious illness is spreading and old enemies are astir. And Cloud, who walked away from the life of a hero to live in solitude, must step forward yet again...
3. Made in Abyss
A vast, mysterious chasm gives this adventure a distinctive structure: every descent brings new discoveries, but also escalating physical and emotional danger. The contrast between the setting’s wonder and its harshness is central to the experience. Choose it for imaginative exploration and high stakes, not for a light or cozy adventure.
4. The Ancient Magus’ Bride
Folkloric magic, fae creatures, and a quiet rural atmosphere shape this character-centered fantasy. Its appeal lies less in a conventional quest than in watching its characters navigate belonging, power, and personal change. It suits viewers after a slower, moodier story rooted in mythic imagery.
5. Mushishi
Rather than follow one escalating plot, Mushishi tells contemplative stories about people encountering mysterious life-forms known as mushi. Nature feels strange and consequential, and many episodes stand on their own. It is an excellent choice when you want atmospheric, episodic fantasy instead of a long battle-driven arc.
6. The Apothecary Diaries
Palace intrigue and medical mysteries give this historical fantasy a different rhythm from sword-and-sorcery adventure. Maomao’s sharp observations drive the cases, while the court setting adds questions of status and power. Pick it for clever problem-solving, distinctive characters, and a fantasy world whose magic is less important than its mysteries.

This isekai makes its central fantasy mechanism a source of psychological pressure rather than an easy advantage. Subaru’s repeated attempts to change disastrous outcomes create suspense and force him to reckon with the consequences of his decisions. Its intensity and looping structure are compelling for viewers who enjoy emotionally demanding, high-stakes stories.
Rank #2
- Bastard!! Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy - Season 1 [Blu-Ray]
8. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Under its bright magical-girl imagery, this compact series examines the cost of wishes and the dangers hidden inside a seemingly simple bargain. Its visual style shifts to match the increasingly unsettling story. It works especially well for viewers who want a tightly paced fantasy with a darker edge.
9. Spirited Away
Hayao Miyazaki’s film follows a girl navigating a spirit world governed by strange customs, vivid personalities, and uncertain rules. Its self-contained format makes it an easy recommendation when you want a complete fantasy in one sitting. The film’s imaginative setting and emotional coming-of-age story make it a natural entry point for the genre.
10. The Twelve Kingdoms
A young woman is pulled into a world of kingdoms, political upheaval, and supernatural powers, then has to grow into the demands that world places on her. Its interest in leadership and responsibility gives the fantasy setting more weight than a simple travelogue. Choose it for a substantial, politically minded other-world adventure.
11. Princess Mononoke
This feature film stages a conflict between industrial expansion and the natural world without reducing either side to a simple villain. Gods, humans, and the forest collide in a story with a grave, elemental tone. It is a strong choice for viewers seeking epic fantasy and moral complexity in a film-length format.
12. The Vision of Escaflowne
Romance, prophecy, and giant mechanical armor meet in a fantasy adventure set on another world. The mixture gives it a distinctive identity: it is part quest, part melodrama, and part battle story. Try it if you like elaborate world-building and a more theatrical, genre-blending style.
13. Delicious in Dungeon
A dungeon expedition becomes both a survival challenge and a culinary experiment as the party turns monsters into meals. The comic premise gradually reveals a carefully considered fantasy ecosystem and gives the characters practical reasons to understand it. It is an inviting pick for viewers who want party-based adventure with warmth and humor.
14. Land of the Lustrous
In a strikingly unfamiliar world, gem-like beings defend themselves against mysterious attackers. The series uses its unusual characters and visual design to explore identity, change, and the cost of survival. Its atmosphere is more contemplative than conventional action fantasy, making it a distinctive choice for viewers open to ambiguity.

15. The Boy and the Beast
This animated film pairs a human boy with a beast-world mentor, building an adventure around training, conflict, and an unconventional bond. Its compact format keeps the emotional through-line clear while leaving room for a lively fantasy setting. Consider it when you want a complete story rather than a multi-season commitment.
16. Ranking of Kings
A young prince whose strength is underestimated sets out on a journey through a kingdom full of danger, secrets, and shifting loyalties. Its expressive, storybook-like presentation contrasts with the seriousness of its character conflicts. The result is an accessible adventure that still has room for political twists and emotional turns.
17. KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!
This isekai is built around comic failure: its adventuring party is less a band of perfect heroes than a collection of liabilities who keep stumbling into trouble. The jokes and character chemistry take priority over grand stakes, so it is best for viewers seeking a playful fantasy rather than a serious epic.

18. The Faraway Paladin
Raised by three unusual guardians in the ruins of a city, the young protagonist grows into a world of gods, monsters, and personal duty. Its earnest tone and focus on learning make it a good fit for viewers who enjoy classic fantasy values and a coming-of-age structure.

This feature follows Sophie into a world of spells, a moving house, and the human cost of war. Its romance and wonder are balanced by a dreamlike, sometimes unruly storybook logic. Pick it for visual invention and a self-contained fantasy whose emotional center is transformation.
20. The Rising of the Shield Hero
A summoned outsider is placed in a hostile role and has to build strength and alliances from a difficult starting point. The series leans into progression and conflict, making it a fit for viewers who like game-like fantasy frameworks and a protagonist’s gradual climb.
