Spoilers for “Wrap Thee in Terror.” In Season 2, Episode 3 of 1923, Alexandra Dutton’s Ellis Island ordeal takes the foreground, while the family in Montana struggles through a brutal winter. Carly Lane’s March 9, 2025, review for CBR argues that Julia Schlaepfer’s performance makes Alexandra the episode’s standout—and that the rest of the Duttons briefly take a back seat.
What happens in “Wrap Thee in Terror”?
The episode runs on two pressures at once: Alexandra’s difficult passage through Ellis Island and the Duttons’ effort to survive winter at the Montana ranch. Spencer’s continuing journey remains another thread, but the review’s emphasis is clear: Alexandra’s story becomes the episode’s emotional center.
The Montana strand keeps the episode connected to the larger family drama. Jacob and Cara are trying to hold the family together amid the aftermath of a punishing blizzard. A TV Fanatic recap describes Jacob and Zane considering burning a wagon for warmth and Cara dealing with the aftermath of a wolf attack; these details underscore the danger facing the ranch, even as Alexandra’s journey commands more attention.
Why does Alexandra’s Ellis Island story dominate?
Ellis Island puts Alexandra in a difficult, unfamiliar situation and gives the episode a concentrated emotional through-line. Rather than treating her as one more member of the ensemble, the story asks viewers to stay with her experience while the Montana plot develops in parallel. That shift in focus is what makes the episode feel like a turning point for her.

Schlaepfer’s performance is central to that effect. Lane’s CBR review describes Alexandra as carrying the episode and calls her one of the show’s most compelling characters. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a claim of universal consensus; it reflects how strongly Alexandra’s peril and Schlaepfer’s portrayal shape this installment.
A Collider interview listing surfaced under the headline “We Find a New Level of Strength From Her,” identifying Schlaepfer as discussing the making of the Ellis Island episode. Without a verified transcript, it cannot support a direct quotation or a more specific account of her production experience. Nor does the episode’s depiction, by itself, establish how accurately it represents historical immigration procedures.

How does the Montana winter plot compare?
The ranch storyline works as a counterweight to Alexandra’s journey. Its danger is physical and communal: the family faces weather, injury, and the practical challenge of keeping one another alive. Jacob and Cara’s efforts to preserve the family give the episode an ensemble backbone, even when the balance of attention shifts toward Alexandra.
The contrast is useful rather than a competition between plots. Alexandra’s strand is a focused test of one character under pressure; the Montana strand shows a family enduring pressure together. Spencer’s continuing journey adds another point of movement, though the review’s central argument is that this episode belongs most clearly to Alexandra.

Is Alexandra the standout in this episode?
In Lane’s reading, yes. “Wrap Thee in Terror” gives Alexandra the strongest emotional focus, and Schlaepfer’s performance is the reason that focus holds. The episode does not abandon the other Duttons: the winter plot sustains the family stakes and reminds viewers what is happening back in Montana. But its defining shift is that Alexandra, rather than the ranch, becomes the center of the hour.
