The Eminem Show arrived on May 26, 2002, after its release was moved earlier in the wake of an online leak. The 18th anniversary fell in 2020, so this is a retrospective look at 15 documented facts about the album, its making, release and later expanded edition.
Release and reception
1. The album came out on May 26, 2002

2. The release was moved up after the album leaked
The Recording Academy says the album leaked 25 days before its intended release, prompting Interscope to move the date earlier. Eminem’s 2022 anniversary announcement also says the release was advanced to counter bootlegging and meet demand. The accounts differ on the original target date—and the Academy mentions an intermediate May 28 date—so the clearest uncontested point is that it was moved forward and reached stores May 26. 3. It debuted at No. 1, with a reported 284,000 first-day sales
The Recording Academy reports that the album sold 284,000 copies on its first day and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It says first-full-week sales topped 1.3 million. Eminem’s 2022 announcement gives the same first-day figure and reports 1.3 million the following week; these are figures reported by those sources, not a fresh chart audit.

4. Its sales certifications and worldwide totals depend on the source and date
Eminem’s 2022 announcement calls The Eminem Show the best-selling album in the United States and worldwide for 2002, reports worldwide sales of 27 million, and notes its RIAA Diamond certification. The Recording Academy’s 2017 retrospective instead says worldwide sales exceeded 10 million; the artist page explains Diamond in the United States as sales in excess of 10 million. These are differently dated and framed claims, not interchangeable totals. Eminem’s 2022 announcement · Recording Academy retrospective
How the album was made
5. Eminem produced roughly 90 percent of it
The Recording Academy says Eminem self-produced roughly 90 percent of the album. Jeff Bass helped build tracks for the main singles, while Dr. Dre was executive producer. Eminem’s 2022 announcement similarly characterizes most tracks as produced by Eminem with Jeff Bass. Recording Academy retrospective · Eminem’s 2022 announcement
6. The sound drew on 1970s rock
The Recording Academy says Eminem described a goal of joining hip-hop with the sonic energy of 1970s rock, using guitar-driven melodies alongside rap rhythms. That influence is especially explicit in two track details.

8. “‘Till I Collapse” draws on Queen
The Recording Academy identifies the beat of “‘Till I Collapse” as an interpolation of the intro to Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” An interpolation re-creates or reworks musical material rather than using the original recording as a sample. Recording Academy retrospective

11. Some early clean editions altered “Drips” and still left profanity audible
In the Recording Academy’s account, certain early clean editions removed the entire ninth track, “Drips,” and replaced it with four seconds of silence. The retrospective also notes that some heavily censored versions still left profanity audible. This describes some early clean copies, not every clean edition. Recording Academy retrospective

14. Eminem said he toned down the shock value
In the 2022 anniversary announcement, Eminem’s site recalled a statement he had made to SPIN: “One of the frustrating things was people saying, ‘He’s got to cuss to sell records,’ he says. ‘That’s why with this album I toned it down a bit as far as shock value. I wanted to show that I’m a solid artist and I’m here to stay.’” The quotation is attributed there to Eminem speaking to the magazine at the time. Eminem’s 2022 announcement
15. A 2002 critic described it as a more mature Eminem
The Recording Academy retrospective quotes Slant Magazine reviewer Sal Cinquemani describing the record as “a — dare I say it? — more ‘mature’ Eminem.” The quote is presented through the Academy’s account of the review. Recording Academy retrospective
What the expanded edition adds
For the album’s 20th anniversary in 2022, the expanded edition kept all 20 original tracks and added 18 bonus tracks, including B-sides, live performances, instrumentals and “Jimmy, Brian and Mike,” described in the announcement as previously unreleased. Official physical formats included a 2CD edition and a four-LP vinyl edition; the announcement also identified a cassette version. Eminem’s 2022 announcement
