Science-fiction power armor ranges from a warehouse loader to a walking weapons platform. Andrew Liptak’s 2017 roundup describes suits from books, films and games, comparing their mobility, protection, weapons and support systems. The accessible republication has 17 suit headings, despite its title promising 18, so this article covers the 17 entries that can be verified rather than inventing an eighteenth.
These are fictional capabilities, not a ranking of real military equipment. The suits below are arranged roughly from work-oriented or limited designs to more formidable combat systems, following the source’s entertainment framing.
What makes a fictional suit formidable?
There is no shared score or quantitative scale across these works. A suit may be threatening because it amplifies strength and mobility, protects its wearer, supplies weapons or environmental support, or links the wearer to targeting and AI systems. Those benefits can come with trade-offs: a design may be slow, vulnerable, difficult to remove, scarce, or usable only by a particular wearer.
The descriptions below attribute capabilities to the fictional works as summarized by Liptak. They should not be read as evidence about what real exoskeletons can do.

From utility machines to combat armor
1. Caterpillar P-5000 Work Loader — Aliens
The P-5000 is a powered cargo loader, not purpose-built battlefield armor. Its industrial arms and lifting ability make it useful for moving heavy loads; in a fight, its size and strength could still make it dangerous. It lacks the dedicated protection and integrated combat systems associated with later entries.
2. Exo-Suit — Elysium
In Elysium, an exoskeleton augments the wearer’s strength. Its appeal is straightforward: a person gains greater physical power without the suit becoming a fully enclosed, all-purpose combat platform. The design is less about extensive environmental protection or a sophisticated weapons suite.
3. Exo-Suits — Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
The game’s exo-suits enhance soldiers’ movement and physical capabilities, giving them more options for navigating combat. Their value lies in mobility and augmented performance rather than the near-total enclosure and life support of heavier fictional armor.
4. Combat Jackets — Edge of Tomorrow
The combat jackets are powered battlefield equipment that boosts the wearer’s fighting ability and carries weapons. They offer a more direct combat role than a work loader, but their exposed, wearable form does not make them equivalent to a sealed suit with comprehensive life support.

5. LCS Exoskeleton — Linda Nagata’s The Red Trilogy
The LCS exoskeleton belongs to a military setting where powered equipment enhances a soldier’s capabilities. The source presents it as a combat system, but its description does not establish a common measure of protection, strength or firepower that would support a numerical comparison with other suits.
6. Amplified Mobility Platform — Avatar
The AMP suit is a powered vehicle-like platform controlled by a human operator. Its mechanical limbs provide strength and its military configuration brings weapons into the fight. Unlike armor worn closely around the body, the AMP’s scale and cockpit-like operation make it a conspicuous piece of equipment.
7. Delta-6 Accelerator Suit — G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
The Delta-6 is built to improve a soldier’s speed and physical performance. Its enhanced mobility makes it a more threatening combat suit than a purely industrial machine, though the source does not place it on a shared scale for armor or weapons effectiveness.
Systems built for dangerous combat environments
8. T-51B and T-60 Power Armor — Fallout
Fallout’s power armor is protective, powered equipment for combat in a hazardous post-apocalyptic world. The T-51B and T-60 are recognizable variants in the series. Their combination of armor and powered movement offers a substantial advantage over an unarmored opponent, but the source does not provide a measured comparison between the models.

9. Scout Suit — John Steakley’s Armor
The Scout Suit is described as powered armor that enhances strength, speed and protection. The novel’s concept makes the wearer a heavily augmented combatant, with armor distributing impacts across the suit. Because the accessible republication contains apparent transcription mistakes in a quoted passage from the novel, this summary avoids repeating that wording or its questionable details.
10. Crynet Nanosuit — Crysis
The Nanosuit is a technologically advanced combat suit whose capabilities include enhanced strength, speed and protection. Its adaptable systems make the wearer more versatile than a simple armored soldier. In the game, its effectiveness is closely tied to the suit’s advanced technology and the person using it.
11. Fighting Suit — Joe Haldeman’s The Forever War
Haldeman’s fighting suit is designed for soldiers facing extreme battlefield conditions. It combines protection and combat capability with support for operating in hostile environments. The novel’s setting emphasizes that technology can change how soldiers fight, while the suit remains part of a larger military system rather than a guarantee of safety.
12. Goliath Mk III Powersuit — The Expanse
The Goliath Mk III is powered armor intended for combat. Its bulk and protection make it more formidable than a mobility aid, and it is designed to help a wearer operate as an armored fighting unit. As with the other fictional designs, the source gives no standardized data for comparing it with neighboring entries.

The Prawn Bio-Suit is a powerful alien combat machine that responds to its user and can bring considerable force to a fight. Its distinctive threat comes from the combination of heavy mechanical capability and alien technology, rather than from conventional human armor alone.

14. Iron Man Mark III and variants — Iron Man
Tony Stark’s Iron Man armor combines powered movement, protection and an extensive set of weapons and technological aids. Across its variants, the suit represents a highly capable individual combat platform. Its performance is also bound up with Stark’s engineering and access to the technology behind it.
15. MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor — Halo
MJOLNIR armor is designed for the Spartans, augmenting an already exceptional wearer with protection and combat capability. The link between suit and user is central: it is not simply equipment that any soldier can use to become a Spartan. Its combination of armor, strength and battlefield systems makes it one of science fiction’s most formidable infantry suits.
16. Mobile Infantry Powered Suits — Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers
Heinlein’s mobile infantry suits amplify a soldier’s senses, strength, mobility, endurance and firepower. The novel’s famous description treats the suit as an integrated extension of the infantryman: it helps the wearer see and hear better, carry more weapons and ammunition, and endure more punishment. That breadth of support is what makes the concept so influential in depictions of powered infantry.
17. Space Marine Power Armor — Warhammer 40,000
Space Marine armor is the imposing end of the list: heavy powered protection worn by superhuman soldiers and paired with formidable weapons. The suit’s threat cannot be separated from its wearer, whose fictional physical abilities and training exceed those of an ordinary human. Together, armor, weapons and wearer create a battlefield presence that is difficult to match in the settings represented here.
Why the list is 17, not 18
The accessible republication of Andrew Liptak’s December 10, 2017 article contains 17 suit headings while retaining a title that promises 18. The original Verge page could not be verified from the available copy, so an eighteenth entry or a definitive original ranking cannot responsibly be supplied. The 17 titles above are the entries visible in that republication: Andrew Liptak’s article as republished by The EXXtinction.
