Tisdale herself has poked fun at some early outfits, while also recalling the fun of the era and keeping pieces from Sharpay Evans’s High School Musical wardrobe.
Sharpay’s wardrobe and Ashley’s real-life style are not the same thing
Any look back at Tisdale’s fashion needs to separate her screen costumes from her own appearances. Sharpay’s pink-and-glamorous wardrobe was part of a character; Tisdale’s red-carpet clothes and personal style were not simply an extension of that role.

In a 2022 Elle interview, Tisdale said she kept Sharpay’s wardrobe from the first High School Musical film. The clothes became a lasting keepsake of the role, but keeping them does not mean she wanted to dress like Sharpay in everyday life.
The Disney-era look: bright, girly, and often layered
Harper’s Bazaar described Tisdale’s Disney-era fashion as ultra-girly and pink. The publication later characterized her style as a more refined blend of West Coast ease and East Coast glamour. That is the magazine’s retrospective framing, not a rule that every early outfit looked the same or that there was one clean break between eras.

Tisdale has offered her own critique of the period’s styling. In the Elle interview, she said, “The layering was a lot.” Her comment points to a recognizable early-2000s tendency, but it is a personal reflection rather than a verdict on every outfit from the decade.
The 2007 hot-pink dress she later laughed about
One particularly self-aware moment connects a later Tisdale comment to an earlier red-carpet appearance. In May 2017, Teen Vogue revisited a hot-pink dress Tisdale wore to the 2007 MTV Movie Awards and quoted her Instagram reaction: “But seriously WHO dressed me for this,” She also joked that she would not have let Sharpay influence her style so much.

The remark was a joke about that look, not confirmation of who dressed her. It makes the dress a useful example of Tisdale looking back at her Disney-era image with humor, rather than proof that all of her early fashion choices were mistakes.
Sharpay’s costumes that remain part of the story
In January 2026, Vogue Netherlands covered Tisdale revisiting looks for the twentieth anniversary of High School Musical. The coverage named three pieces: the blue “Bop to the Top” dress, a pink skirt suit, and a silver-sequin bolero. These are costume details from the film’s visual world, not evidence of Tisdale’s everyday wardrobe.

The anniversary revisit also puts her earlier wardrobe recollection in context: the clothes were significant enough for her to keep, even as she later became more critical of the era’s excess layering. Revisiting a character’s costumes is a moment of nostalgia, not proof that her personal style returned to Sharpay’s.
Later appearances: a different kind of red-carpet confidence
A November 2023 Teen Vogue report on the publication’s Summit documented Tisdale in an outfit with a boa. She said, “I’m so excited to wear this outfit and wear this boa at this red carpet event.” She also said she felt good about herself. The moment offers a later example of her enjoying a conspicuous red-carpet accessory on her own terms, rather than dressing as Sharpay.

What Tisdale likes—and dislikes—about Y2K trends now
In a September 2026 interview with Woman’s World, Tisdale reflected on early-2000s trends with mixed feelings. She said skirt-over-jeans could be fun again, but leg warmers were not a favorite. These are her personal reactions, not a universal guide to which trends deserve a comeback.
Taken together, the comments suggest a more useful way to read the evolution than simply labeling the early years “bad” and the later years “good.” Tisdale can laugh at an outfit, reject a styling habit, enjoy a trend in retrospect, and still value the costumes and memories attached to the period.

Why “for the better” is a subjective verdict
The clearest evidence for a shift is a combination of Tisdale’s own comments and Harper’s Bazaar’s description of a later, more refined image. Her remarks support a personal reassessment of some early looks; they do not establish an objective ranking of her wardrobe or a single cause for the change. The evolution is best understood as a change in public styling and perspective, with the vivid Disney-era look remaining part of her history rather than something she has to disown.
