A reliable, current IMDb ranking of 18 Hamlet adaptations cannot be established from the available IMDb pages: the community list does not provide a verified, complete set of 18 titles with current ratings and vote counts. IMDb itself says the list was created by a community member and has not been reviewed or verified by IMDb. Rather than invent an order, this guide explains which screen versions are well documented and how to compare them by format, setting and fidelity to Shakespeare’s play.
Why this is not a verified IMDb top 18
IMDb’s “Hamlet adaption list” is a community list, not an IMDb editorial ranking. The available list information does not establish a complete current set of 18 entries, their ratings or vote counts. IMDb’s Hamlet title search is a discovery page, not a ranked list of the 18 best adaptations.

IMDb ratings and vote totals are user-generated and can change. A defensible numerical ranking would need to identify the exact 18 titles, record each live rating and vote count, and give the date checked. Without those details, any ordered list presented as “according to IMDb” would imply a current comparison that has not been verified.
What counts as a Hamlet movie adaptation?
The label can cover theatrical feature films, television adaptations and filmed stage productions, as well as loose retellings that borrow the play’s plot or characters. Those formats are not automatically comparable: a feature-film adaptation and a capture of a stage performance have different constraints and aims. A useful list should say what it includes and distinguish direct adaptations from looser reinterpretations.

#1 Best Overall
IMDb’s title search can help locate works, but search results alone do not set an editorial boundary for “adaptation.” Nor should an older reported count be treated as current: a Court Theatre guide reproduces a historical IMDb description saying there were “over 80 film and TV versions,” but it does not establish a present-day total. Screen versions that show how different adaptations can be
Rather than treating these examples as positions in a rating table, compare them through the choices that shape the viewing experience: how much of the play remains, where the story is set, and whether the work is a film or a television production.
Rank #2
Laurence Olivier’s 1948 film
The Royal Shakespeare Company describes Olivier’s film as following the Oedipal interpretation of his stage performance and cutting Fortinbras, focusing attention on the family conflict. That choice makes the film an interpretation as well as a transfer of the play to screen. Royal Shakespeare Company: Stage history
Grigori Kozintsev’s 1964 film and Tony Richardson’s 1969 version
The RSC includes Kozintsev’s Russian-language film and Richardson’s version in its account of Hamlet on screen. SparkNotes lists Richardson’s adaptation among versions that use most or all of Shakespeare’s text. These are useful examples of why language, production context and textual cuts matter alongside audience ratings. Royal Shakespeare Company · SparkNotes: Movie Adaptations

Rank #3
Derek Jacobi’s 1980 BBC Shakespeare version
The RSC identifies Jacobi’s version as part of the screen history of the play. Its television format is a reason to label it clearly in a list that otherwise promises “movie” adaptations; the label should not obscure the distinction between a television production and a theatrical feature. Royal Shakespeare Company
Franco Zeffirelli’s 1990 film
Zeffirelli’s version is a notable example of a heavily cut adaptation. The RSC calls it radically cut, while SparkNotes includes it among several widely available versions that use most or all of the text. That difference in description is a reminder to specify what “most” means rather than treating fidelity as a simple, universally agreed score. Royal Shakespeare Company · SparkNotes
Rank #4
Kenneth Branagh’s 1996 film
The RSC describes Branagh’s film as a full-text version. SparkNotes says it runs nearly four hours and adds flashbacks that are not in Shakespeare’s play. It is therefore a strong point of comparison for viewers interested in textual completeness, though “full text” does not mean the film avoids interpretive choices. Royal Shakespeare Company · SparkNotes
Michael Almereyda’s 2000 film
Almereyda relocates the story to a modern corporate Manhattan setting: Claudius is the CEO of Denmark Corporation, and Hamlet is a video artist. This version demonstrates how an adaptation can preserve the play’s central conflict while changing its social world and visual language. SparkNotes includes it among versions that use most or all of Shakespeare’s text. SparkNotes

How to read an IMDb ranking when one is available
- Check what is being ranked. A community list, IMDb title search and numerical ranking are different things. Confirm that the list names all entries and displays ratings and vote totals.
- Record the date. A rating is a snapshot, not a permanent score. Include the date checked beside a published ranking.
- Keep the vote count visible. The score and number of votes together give readers more context than a rating alone.
- Separate audience ratings from editorial judgment. IMDb user ratings measure audience responses; they do not establish textual fidelity, historical importance or the “best” adaptation for every viewer.
- Explain the inclusion rules. Identify whether the list includes television films, filmed stage productions and loose retellings, not only theatrical features.
IMDb ratings are not the only way to rank Hamlet adaptations
A list can rank acting performances, fidelity to the text, direction or audience ratings and produce different results each time. JustWatch’s separate list, published and updated April 15, 2026, ranks performances: David Tennant’s 2009 performance is first, Laurence Olivier’s 1948 second and Kenneth Branagh’s 1996 third. That is an editorial performance ranking, not an IMDb user-rating table. JustWatch: The Best Hamlet Movie Performances, Ranked
