17776 is Jon Bois’s 2017 online multimedia fiction work for SB Nation. It imagines a future in which humanity no longer ages, dies, or reproduces, and sentient space probes watch people play football across immense distances and stretches of time. The premise is speculative, not a forecast or a proposal for real-world football.
What is 17776?
17776 is web fiction created and illustrated by Jon Bois and published by SB Nation in 2017. Its full framing—“What football will look like in the future”—signals its central conceit: the sport has been transformed by a radically different human future. It is not a documentary, an official NFL project, or a factual account of future technology.
The story follows conversations among three sentient probes watching Earth. They include fictional versions of Pioneer 9, Pioneer 10, and the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, known in the narrative as Juice. Their distant vantage point gives the work room to move between explanation, comedy, bewilderment, and reflection.
What happens in its imagined future?
In the story’s premise, people stop aging, dying, and reproducing. With no ordinary generational turnover and an extraordinary amount of time available, people remake football into a game that can unfold over immense distances and durations. The probes observe and discuss this unfamiliar sport, helping readers understand a world in which the usual limits on a game—and on human life—have changed.

Those vast games are fictional extrapolations, not a real rules system or a prediction of how American football will develop. Football provides the work’s imaginative framework for considering time, play, consciousness, and the continuity of human life.

This is a scroll-based online work rather than a conventional article. Who made it, and why?
Bois created and illustrated 17776 for SB Nation. In a July 2017 report, Poynter quoted Bois describing his intention: “The goal as conceived was to give the reader a good time.” Poynter also reported that Graham MacAree, SB Nation’s design and development lead, handled much of the back-end work.
