There is no objective, definitive ranking of the best rap videos. This curated guide brings together clips worth watching for their visual invention, storytelling, performance, cultural resonance, influence, and connection to the song. Its order is editorial, not a scorecard—and the examples below are a starting point, not a verified 150-video chronology.

How to read this guide

Rap videos can be compelling for very different reasons: a striking visual idea, a narrative built around the lyrics, an unforgettable performance, humor, political expression, or images that transform how a song feels. The selections here are organized around those strengths rather than presented as an objective ranking.

That approach reflects the range of editorial methods used in existing retrospectives. Rolling Stone describes its list as an editorial and critics’ celebration of hip-hop on screen, while BET’s anniversary package groups choices by distinct contributions. Neither makes a single list definitive. A useful way to compare videos is to ask what the images do for the song, what the artist or director makes possible on screen, and what the clip contributes to hip-hop’s visual history.

Five rap videos to start with

Missy Elliott, “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)”

Rolling Stone points to the video’s unusual, cartoon-like visual identity and the way it makes Elliott’s creative persona central. It is a strong example of a clip whose imagery feels inseparable from the artist’s musical world. Rolling Stone’s video retrospective discusses its place among influential music videos.

The Pharcyde, “Drop”

The group performs in reverse, turning a simple performance setup into a formally disorienting visual puzzle. The concept is easy to grasp and hard to forget: the image works against ordinary movement while keeping the performers and track in focus. BET also highlights the video as an example of mind-bending visuals. BET’s anniversary selection includes it among its themed picks.

Public Enemy, “Fight the Power”

The video’s collective imagery reinforces the song’s political expression. Rather than treating the track as a performance detached from its context, the clip presents hip-hop as a public, communal, and politically charged voice. Both Rolling Stone and BET connect the video with political expression. Rolling Stone and BET discuss it in that broader visual history.

Ice Cube, “It Was a Good Day”

This story rap becomes a sequence of scenes corresponding to the lyrics. The video’s appeal lies in making the song’s details visible: the viewer follows a day taking shape rather than watching a disconnected set of images. Rolling Stone describes it as a story rap rendered through scenes tied to the words.

Outkast, “B.O.B.”

BET singles out the clip’s surreal, rapid-fire imagery, while Rolling Stone describes its vivid, high-energy visual world. The result is a strong match for a song that moves at breakneck pace: the visuals amplify its momentum instead of slowing it down to explain every detail. BET and Rolling Stone both feature the video.

What makes a rap video an all-time pick?

  • Visual invention: Does the clip introduce a distinctive look or a memorable technique?
  • Story or performance: Does it build a narrative, create a compelling performance concept, or use choreography effectively?
  • Cultural or political resonance: Do its images carry meaning beyond illustrating the lyrics?
  • Influence and innovation: Did its approach help expand what rap videos could look or feel like?
  • Connection to the song: Do the images deepen the track, or would they feel interchangeable with another song?

These are editorial comparison points, not a published scoring system. A video does not need to excel on every axis: a direct political statement and an absurdist visual experiment can both be essential for entirely different reasons.

How rap videos changed the way audiences saw hip-hop

Hip-hop video history is also a history of changing distribution and visual ambition. Rolling Stone describes an early television era in which video outlets widened circulation, followed by an increasingly director-led period of experimentation. Later, internet distribution expanded access to audiences beyond television’s gatekeepers. The shifts did not happen as a single clean break, and the available accounts do not establish precise dates for each milestone.

That history helps explain why an all-time guide should include more than one era or visual style. Some clips make their mark through a striking concept; others through narrative, performance, collective imagery, or a close fit between sound and picture. The best way to approach the history is as a changing conversation between artists, directors, technology, and audiences—not a contest with one winning formula.

More than one kind of “best”

Existing retrospectives underline the point. Rolling Stone frames its selections as a broad celebration of hip-hop’s screen history; BET’s anniversary package uses themed superlatives to recognize different contributions. Those are useful ways to discover videos, but they are editorial choices rather than proof of a universal canon. A personal watchlist can be more useful if it records what each video does: invents a visual language, tells a story, makes a political argument, captures a performance, or lets the song’s energy take over the screen.

Director Mark Romanek, discussing Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” in Rolling Stone, put his approach this way: “I never felt like I was making a rap video, I felt like I was making a rock video that had rapping in it.” The remark illustrates how a director’s frame of reference can shape a clip without defining what rap video-making must be.

In comments about the investment and visual choices surrounding rap videos, Hype Williams told Rolling Stone: “There was no color, no originality. Record companies assumed that the people who bought rap records didn’t need to see quality, so nobody was putting in the effort or the money.” His criticism points to the importance of treating rap videos as crafted visual work, not disposable promotion. Rolling Stone’s account reproduces both directors’ comments in its wider discussion of music-video history.
