They are evidence of stalking and a serious invasion of privacy—not entertainment. This account explains the events, court proceedings, and media response without reproducing or linking to the images.
What happened to Erin Andrews
Contemporaneous reporting by CBS News and The Associated Press said Michael David Barrett obtained a room adjacent to Andrews at the Nashville Marriott at Vanderbilt University, tampered with the room-door peephole, recorded her, and uploaded video online. The recordings were made in 2008; public exposure followed in 2009. CBS/AP’s October 7, 2009 report described the incident and its implications for hotel security.
The details matter: the recordings were covert, and Andrews did not consent. They should not be sought out, reposted, or treated as celebrity images for consumption. Sharing them repeats the violation rather than simply revisiting a news story.
The criminal case and civil lawsuit were separate
Barrett’s criminal case
Barrett pleaded guilty to interstate stalking and was sentenced to 2½ years in prison in 2010, according to contemporaneous reporting summarized in ABC News’ 2016 trial coverage. That criminal resolution addressed Barrett’s conduct; it was not the civil jury’s damages decision.

Andrews’ Nashville civil case
In the Nashville civil case, Andrews sought $75 million from Barrett and hotel-related defendants. A jury awarded $55 million in March 2016. The demand and award are distinct figures: the award was not $75 million. Courthouse News Service reported the verdict on March 7, 2016; ABC News’ February 29 coverage reported the amount Andrews sought.
A separate Illinois appeal
A later Illinois appellate matter involved claims tied to a Columbus hotel and a booking-services company. The appellate court affirmed dismissal of the claim against that company. That ruling concerned a separate claim and did not reverse the Nashville jury award. The opinion is available through a CaseMine mirror of Andrews v. Marriott International, Inc.

Why publication of the stills became a media-ethics issue
In July 2009, the New York Post published three still images from the illicit recording. ESPN objected and barred Post reporters from appearing on its programs, a dispute reported at the time by CBS News and the Associated Press on July 27, 2009. The episode illustrates that publishing an image can amplify the original harm even when the underlying recording is already circulating. An account can report on the violation and its consequences without displaying the material.

In 2009, travel editor and author Peter Greenberg called the incident “a wakeup call for the hotel industry.” John Burns, then president of Hospitality Technology Consulting, said, “There is no consistent policy within individual brands or across the industry,” referring to how hotels handled requests for adjacent rooms. Both statements were reported at the time by CBS/AP; they are historical observations, not evidence of current hotel practices.

The documented case supports a specific account of what happened to Andrews. It does not establish a present-day rate of hotel-room surveillance or prove that a particular precaution would have prevented this crime.
