These 15 novels offer a starting point for exploring Dominican fiction, from nineteenth-century works to contemporary writing by Dominican and Dominican-descended authors. They are grouped by period and literary approach, not ranked: there is no single authoritative top 15. Here, “Dominican authors” includes writers whose work is part of Dominican literature whether they wrote in the Dominican Republic or abroad, as the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains.
What makes a novel part of Dominican literature?
Domician literary identity is not limited to books written on the island. The Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes Dominican literature as work produced in the country or abroad by Dominicans. The Dominican Writers Association, meanwhile, describes its scope as writers of Dominican descent. That broader frame makes room for diaspora writers such as Julia Alvarez, while still distinguishing them from authors born in the Dominican Republic.

The novel arrived later and held less prominence in Dominican literary history than poetry, essays and short fiction. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs traces influences including French Romanticism and identifies recurring lenses such as the sugar-cane novel, biblical novels and costumbrista fiction. Dominicana Online also discusses propaganda fiction. These are useful ways to orient a reader, not fixed or exhaustive categories.
Early and historical fiction
El montero — Pedro Francisco Bonó
Dominicana Online calls this 1856 work the first novel written by a Dominican; other accounts complicate the claim, so it is best read as an early landmark rather than an uncontested starting point. ISFODOSU includes it among Dominican narrative classics.

#1 Best Overall
La fantasma de Higüey — Francisco Javier Angulo Guridi
Dominicana Online dates the novel to 1857. The same overview notes a competing claim that Angulo Guridi’s Los amores de los indios, written in 1843, came first. The disagreement is a reminder that identifying the “first” Dominican novel depends partly on what counts as a novel and when a work was written or published.
Enriquillo — Manuel de Jesús Galván
A landmark of nineteenth-century Dominican fiction, Enriquillo dates to 1879 in Dominicana Online’s account and appears in ISFODOSU’s classics collection. It is a natural choice for readers interested in the early development of the historical novel in the Dominican tradition.
Guanuma — Federico García Godoy
ISFODOSU includes Guanuma in its narrative collection. Dominicana Online places it within García Godoy’s trilogy alongside Rufinito and Alma dominicana.
Rank #2
La sangre — Tulio M. Cestero
This title appears in ISFODOSU’s Dominican classics collection and among the notable novels identified by Dominicana Online. It adds another point of entry into the early national narrative tradition.

Over — Ramón Marrero Aristy
Dominicana Online identifies Over as a representative “novela de la caña,” or sugar-cane novel, a category focused on the sugar industry. It is also included in the ISFODOSU collection, making it a strong choice for readers approaching Dominican fiction through social and economic history.
Cañas y bueyes — Francisco E. Moscoso Puello
Dominicana Online names this as another representative sugar-industry novel. The source list reviewed for this guide does not provide additional edition or publication details, so check a library or publisher catalogue before choosing a copy.
Rank #3
Jenjibre — Andrés Pérez Alfonseca
Dominicana Online places this title in the sugar-cane novel category. Its spelling and edition details should be checked against a library or publisher catalogue, particularly when searching for a copy.
La mañosa — Juan Bosch
Dominicana Online lists La mañosa among costumbrista works—fiction attentive to local customs and everyday life—and as a novel often cited in discussions of Dominican fiction. It offers a different lens from the industry-focused sugar-cane novels in this group.
Trementina, clerén y bongó — Julio González Herrera
Included in ISFODOSU’s classics collection, this novel is categorized by Dominicana Online as propaganda fiction. That label is a historical classification, not a complete description of the book or a judgment on its literary value.
Rank #4
Modern and experimental fiction
Los ángeles de hueso — Aída Cartagena Portalatín
Dominicana Online identifies this 1967 novel as an early experimental work. It is a useful option for readers curious about fiction that departs from more conventional narrative forms.
Escalera para Electra — Aída Cartagena Portalatín
Dominicana Online also describes this 1970 novel as experimental. Read it alongside Los ángeles de hueso to explore two examples of Cartagena Portalatín’s formally adventurous fiction.
Sólo cenizas hallarás (bolero) — Pedro Vergés
Dominicana Online calls this novel a major landmark and associates it with the Blasco Ibáñez Prize and the Spanish Critics International Award in 1980. Readers may want to confirm the award chronology against primary award records; the title itself is a strong candidate for exploring modern Dominican fiction.

Hecho en Saturno — Rita Indiana
Rita Indiana is represented in the Dominican Writers Association’s bookshop with Hecho en Saturno. The listing establishes the author-title connection, but not a synopsis or edition history; check the specific publisher listing for language and format.
In the Time of the Butterflies — Julia Alvarez
Julia Alvarez is a Dominican-descended writer, not Dominican-born. Her novel appears in the Dominican Writers Association’s bookshop, reflecting the wider literary community that includes writers of Dominican descent. Confirm the edition and language when buying or borrowing; a storefront listing alone does not establish which formats are currently available.
How to choose a starting point
- For early literary history: Start with El montero or Enriquillo, keeping in mind that claims about the first Dominican novel are disputed.
- For social and economic history: Consider Over, a recognized example of the sugar-cane novel.
- For local custom and everyday life: Look at La mañosa, which Dominicana Online classifies as costumbrista.
- For experimental form: Choose either of Aída Cartagena Portalatín’s novels, the two works directly identified as experimental in the sources cited here.
- For contemporary and diaspora perspectives: Explore Rita Indiana and Julia Alvarez, while checking each book’s language, edition and availability separately.
The Dominican Writers Association’s storefront includes both Spanish-language and English-language titles, but that does not establish that every book in this guide has an English translation. ISFODOSU’s “Clásicos Dominicanos Serie I: Narrativa” collection includes ten works; that is the scope of its collection, not a complete canon. Treat this list as an editorially chosen route into a varied tradition, rather than a definitive ranking.
