If you want the coercion, deadly rules and social pressure of Squid Game in a feature film, start with Battle Royale or The Hunger Games. The films below range from forced arena contests to workplace kill-or-be-killed orders, trapped-room puzzles and survival under scarcity. They are grouped by how closely their central setup matches the series; the available evidence supports 13 distinct films or adaptations, not 15 equally strong picks.
Closest matches: people forced into deadly contests
These films put contestants or targets inside an organized spectacle or game, making them the most direct matches for Squid Game’s lethal competition.
Battle Royale (2000)
A group of teenagers is taken to an island and ordered to fight to the death. That imposed contest makes this one of the closest film comparisons to Squid Game; its ensemble and island setting also leave room for class commentary. Time Out discusses the comparison, while Rotten Tomatoes summarizes the forced fight-to-the-death premise.
The Hunger Games (2012)
A government-run arena turns survival into public spectacle, set within a dystopian society shaped by class hierarchy. It is a strong choice if the part of Squid Game that interests you most is the way an institution makes violence entertainment and reinforces inequality. Time Out and Rotten Tomatoes support the comparison.

- How to Play: Compete with your friends to identify popular movies from the most convoluted movie summaries possible. Has your mom ever tried to explain a film that she just watched? Did it make one ounce of sense? Of course not–and that’s precisely the inspiration for this game. For example: A goose suddenly dies and it makes everyone really depressed. Psst, it’s 'Top Gun’.
- Package Includes: Features 125 game cards–each featuring a uniquely-terrible description of a movie. Includes instructions for two distinct ways to play (competitive & casual). Suitable for 2 to 8 players.
- Perfect for parties: Brass Monkey’s “Poorly Explained Movies Game” is the perfect party game to make sure everyone has a great time, bring it to your next college dorm game night, happy hour, or even bachelor/bachelorette party and see for yourself.
- Gift Ideas: Ideal gift for birthdays, graduation, holiday gifts, and Christmas
The 10th Victim (1965)
This older, more satirical dystopian film turns killing into televised entertainment. Its tone and era differ from Squid Game, but it shares the unnerving idea of violence packaged as a public game. Time Out includes it among the film comparisons.
The Running Man (1987)
Contestants are pursued for an audience’s entertainment in a televised dystopian spectacle. Choose it for a more action-driven take on the same basic conflict: a controlled media event makes survival part of the show. Rotten Tomatoes lists it as a related survival-game recommendation.
Deadly rules imposed on ordinary people
These films are less about an arena contest than about coercion: someone else sets the terms, and the characters must decide how far they will go to survive.

The Belko Experiment (2016)
Employees are trapped in their workplace and forced into kill-or-be-killed decisions. Its office setting makes the coercion feel pointedly ordinary: the game is imposed on people who came to work, not on willing contestants. Time Out identifies it as a film in the same recommendation space.

A desperate protagonist faces a series of escalating tasks. This is a task-game comparison rather than an arena battle: the tension comes from each new demand and the pressure to keep going. Time Out includes the film among its related picks.
The Hunt (2020)
People are stranded in a booby-trapped forest and forced to survive. Unlike a structured competition with visible rounds, its appeal is the pursuit and the danger of trying to escape. Rotten Tomatoes recommends it as a related survival thriller.

Traps, puzzles and survival under scarcity
These picks replace a formal contest with a deadly environment or an unequal system. They fit best if you want the problem-solving, moral choices or social critique more than the spectacle of an arena.
Cube (1997)
A group is trapped in a structure of dangerous rooms and must work out how to move through it. The game-like appeal lies in deciphering the rules and making choices under pressure, not in fighting for an audience. Time Out includes Cube among its comparisons.
The Platform (2020)
This dystopian survival story centers on unequal access to food. Its connection to Squid Game is social critique under life-or-death pressure, rather than a set of competitive games. It is the pick for viewers interested in how scarcity shapes behavior. Time Out includes it in its recommendation list.

The Maze Runner (2014)
This young-adult science-fiction survival story is built around finding a way out of a maze. It shares the puzzle-and-escape dimension of deadly games, but offers a different kind of survival setup from a contest among contestants. Rotten Tomatoes lists it as a related film.
Lord of the Flies (1963 or 1990)
Both the 1963 and 1990 adaptations tell a broader story of a stranded group’s social order collapsing. Neither is an organized game, so the connection is the pressure of survival and the way people behave when the usual rules break down. Choose either adaptation for group conflict rather than game mechanics. Rotten Tomatoes includes the story among related survival recommendations.

Death Race 2000 (1975)
This campier, action-driven spectacle presents violence as entertainment. It is a tonal alternative if you want a more exaggerated take on a society consuming violent competition, rather than the tense social drama of Squid Game. Time Out recommends it in the same broad category.
Oldboy (2003)
This South Korean puzzle-box thriller is not a contest film. Its connection is looser: pick it for a grim mystery, disturbing revelations and twists rather than rounds, competitors or survival-game rules. Time Out includes it among films for viewers drawn to Squid Game.
Want another deadly-game story in a series?
These are television series, not movies, so they do not count toward the film list. Netflix Tudum describes Alice in Borderland as deadly games in a dystopian Tokyo, The 8 Show as a game show trapping eight strangers, and 3% as a competition tied to class inequality. See Netflix Tudum’s related-series guide. Netflix notes that recommendations may vary by region; check local availability before choosing where to watch.
