It documents one clear public dispute—the 2021 exchange with Los Angeles frozen-yogurt shop Bigg Chill—alongside personal disclosures about addiction, recovery, trauma and health. Those disclosures are not misconduct. Here is what the reported episodes establish, and what they do not.
What happened in the Demi Lovato and Bigg Chill frozen-yogurt dispute?
In 2021, Lovato publicly criticized Bigg Chill, a Los Angeles frozen-yogurt shop, over diet-related offerings. She said the options were triggering in light of eating-disorder concerns. The shop responded that it offered a range of products for customers with different dietary needs.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Lovato apologized. The disagreement can reasonably be discussed as a question of how a public figure raises criticism about a local business: her concern was personal and sincerely expressed, while the shop’s response offered context about why it stocked those products. The reporting does not establish that the shop’s offerings were intended to harm customers or that Lovato’s criticism caused lasting financial damage.
Did the dispute affect Bigg Chill’s public profile?
The Los Angeles Times reported that Bigg Chill’s Instagram following rose from 6,000 to more than 42,000 in less than a week after the dispute. That is a reported change in followers, not evidence of lasting business impact; the figure alone also cannot establish how much of the change was directly caused by the exchange.

What did Lovato say about the 2018 overdose?
Lovato’s overdose and recovery are serious health matters, not “questionable things” she did. CBS News reported her 2018 hospitalization and quoted her public statement that “this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time.” In a 2021 interview with Tracy Smith for CBS, Lovato said doctors told her she had five to ten minutes to live if nobody found her. That is Lovato recounting what doctors told her, not an independently verified medical statistic.
In that interview, Lovato also said, “Regardless of what other people may have said or done, my actions put me in the seat that’s in front of you today.” Her account speaks to her own understanding of responsibility and recovery. It should not be turned into a sensational scandal or treated as a complete medical record.

Does Lovato’s public sobriety milestone prove she was deceptive?
No. The Washington Post reported that Lovato later found it uncomfortable to watch a 2018 public celebration of her six-year sobriety milestone. She described a gap between her public mental-health advocacy and the private struggle she was experiencing at the time. That retrospective account adds context to the pressures of presenting recovery publicly; it does not prove that the milestone was fraudulent or that people who celebrated it were knowingly misled.
Why aren’t Lovato’s disclosures about trauma and illness on a list of misconduct?
ABC News’ 2011 interview records Lovato discussing bullying, eating disorders, self-harm and leaving Sonny with a Chance. These are disclosures about distress and treatment, not evidence of wrongdoing. Similarly, The Guardian reported Lovato’s accounts of sexual assault in the 2021 docuseries Dancing with the Devil. The reporting does not name the alleged perpetrators or establish an adjudicated outcome. Being assaulted is not misconduct by the person who disclosed it, and speculation about identities is not warranted.

Lovato’s account of her own experience should be attributed as such. Elton John, speaking in the docuseries as quoted by The Washington Post, said, “Moderation doesn’t work, sorry.” That is John’s remark, not a finding about Lovato or a substitute for her account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many incidents can the reporting actually support?
These sources support a documented public dispute and several important first-person accounts that require different treatment. They do not establish 15 distinct questionable actions. Calling illness, addiction, trauma or recovery “questionable things” would confuse personal disclosures with public conduct and imply a judgment the evidence does not support.
