There is no definitive, universally agreed ranking of anime’s greatest moments. This selection of 15 is an editorial guide, chosen for scenes’ lasting recognition, dramatic force, distinctive imagery or dialogue, influence beyond their original works, and range across eras and genres. The list is not ranked, and some entries contain major spoilers.

15 memorable moments in anime history

These scenes and story beats show different ways an anime moment can endure: through an image that travels beyond its film, a turn that changes a fight, or an ending that gives a character’s journey its final shape. Spoilers are marked before consequential reveals.

1. Kaneda’s motorcycle slide — Akira (1988)

After a game of chicken with Joker and the Clowns, Kaneda skids his motorcycle to a stop in a shower of smoke and sparks. The low, controlled slide is instantly legible even outside the film’s story: a striking image of speed, attitude, and precision. Carolyn Burke’s Crunchyroll feature describes it as a moment often alluded to and documents homages in Western animation and film—evidence of influence beyond anime, though not a measured popularity ranking. Read the Crunchyroll feature on the Akira slide.

2. Goku first becomes a Super Saiyan — Dragon Ball Z

Spoiler: Goku’s transformation takes place during his battle with Frieza. The sudden shift from a desperate contest to a new level of power became one of the series’ defining dramatic turns. Crunchyroll’s franchise guide places the transformation in the Frieza fight; its Naruto rewatch coverage later compares the impact of Rock Lee’s reveal with the power-up pattern associated with Goku. 3. Rock Lee drops his weights — Naruto

Spoiler: In Lee’s fight with Gaara, the removal of his weighted gear reveals that he has been moving under a handicap. It changes the audience’s understanding of what his speed and effort mean, and sharpens the stakes of the fight. Crunchyroll’s rewatch discussion calls attention to the reveal and its kinship with dramatic power-up scenes. Read Crunchyroll’s Naruto rewatch discussion.

4. The “Last Shooting” — Mobile Suit Gundam, episode 43

Spoiler: In the Battle of A Baoa Qu, the damaged RX-78-2 Gundam fires its beam rifle at Char’s Zeong. AnimeNation’s 2010 account identifies the scene as the “Last Shooting”: a concise image of a battle pushed to its limit, with the machine’s damage part of the moment’s force. The description is an editorial account, not official production documentation. Read AnimeNation’s discussion of iconic anime scenes.

5. Joe Yabuki’s final image — Ashita no Joe 2, episode 47

Spoiler: Joe sits slumped in his chair, exhausted but smiling. AnimeNation writer John interprets the image as the culmination of Joe’s pursuit of his dream. That reading belongs to the critic, rather than standing as a verified consensus; the stillness of the image gives the ending its emotional weight. AnimeNation’s account of the scene.

6. Kenshiro turns away: “You’re already dead” — Hokuto no Ken

Kenshiro’s unhurried turn away from an enemy, paired with the famous line, turns composure into spectacle: the danger has already passed, even if the opponent has not yet understood it. AnimeNation highlights the line and staging. Translations of dialogue can vary by edition, so readers should treat the English wording here as the familiar rendering rather than a claim about one definitive translation. 7–15. What makes an anime moment iconic?

The six sourced examples above span theatrical film and television, and range from action spectacle to a character’s ending. They illustrate why “iconic” is a judgment rather than a settled category: a scene may be remembered for its visual design, its effect on a character’s story, or the way later works echo its staging. No common scoring system or representative poll establishes a definitive fifteen.

For historical context beyond any one scene, Tuttle Publishing’s Spring 2026 trade catalog describes Anime: A History as a survey of notable Japanese animated films and pivotal moments. It offers background rather than a definitive guide to this list; current availability is not established here. See Tuttle Publishing’s Spring 2026 catalog.
