The credit belongs to a particular adaptation and language: English dubs may use different performers. Three of the best-known pairings—Son Goku, Naruto Uzumaki and Monkey D. Luffy—are also confirmed by official franchise pages.
Japanese performances: ten recognizable characters
The list below draws on a March 16, 2026 FandomWire article, with official confirmation noted where available. For roles whose credits are not independently confirmed by an official cast page here, the cited list is the attribution source; treat the adaptation and performer pairing as specific rather than universal.
| Character | Performer and version | Credit note |
|---|---|---|
| Son Goku | Masako Nozawa, Japanese Dragon Ball | Toei Animation identifies Goku as the protagonist and credits Nozawa on its Dragon Ball Super character page. |
| Naruto Uzumaki | Junko Takeuchi, Japanese Naruto: Shippuden | Listed in the cast section of the official Naruto site. |
| Monkey D. Luffy | Mayumi Tanaka, Japanese One Piece TV anime | Toei Animation’s series listing identifies Luffy and credits Tanaka. It dates the TV anime’s start to October 20, 1999. |
| Edward Elric | Romi Park, Japanese Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood | Pairing reported by FandomWire. |
| Gon Freecss | Megumi Han, Japanese 2011 Hunter × Hunter; Junko Takeuchi, Japanese 1999 series | The performers differ by adaptation. |
| Killua Zoldyck | Mariya Ise, Japanese 2011 Hunter × Hunter; Kanako Mitsuhashi, earlier version | The 2011 and earlier-series credits are distinct. |
| Ash Ketchum (Satoshi) | Rica Matsumoto, Japanese Pokémon | Pairing reported by FandomWire. |
| Armin Arlert | Marina Inoue, Japanese Attack on Titan | Pairing reported by FandomWire. |
| Kurapika | Miyuki Sawashiro, Japanese 2011 Hunter × Hunter; Yuki Kaida, earlier version | The performer depends on the series adaptation. |
| Kenshin Himura | Mayo Suzukaze, Japanese 1996 Rurouni Kenshin anime | Pairing reported by FandomWire. |
Why the language and adaptation matter
A character does not have one voice credit across every release. Anime may have a Japanese original performance and separate English or other-language dubs; a remake or another adaptation can also recast the role. The table names Japanese performances, not a claim about every version. For Gon, Killua and Kurapika, it also distinguishes the 2011 Hunter × Hunter anime from the earlier series.
Why are male characters sometimes voiced by women?
The cited list describes female performers voicing young male leads as a recurring pattern in long-running shonen anime. It does not establish that this is a universal rule or prove one reason for the choices. Although that article emphasizes vocal stability, the credits alone do not demonstrate that it explains these casting decisions. A specific production’s rationale should not be assumed without a statement from its creators.

How to check a voice credit
- Identify the exact version. Note the series, adaptation, season or film, and the language of the performance.
- Look for an official cast listing. Franchise or studio character pages can confirm both the character and performer, as Toei’s pages do for Goku and Luffy and the official Naruto page does for Naruto.
- Keep dub credits separate. A Japanese cast credit does not identify the English or another dub’s performer.
For the three official cross-checks, see the Toei Goku profile, the official Naruto: Shippuden cast page and Toei’s One Piece listing. The remaining pairings in the table are reported by FandomWire’s March 16, 2026 list.
